Those of you on Twitter will have noted the hash tag #deprem oldu trending right to the top. That means "There was an earthquake," and that's because a few minutes ago in Istanbul, we had an earthquake. No reports on damages or casualties. It was a small quake. 4.4 on the richter scale. But oh yes, you feel it. That gets your attention, for sure.

If you live in a seismic zone, be prepared. Nail heavy items to the wall. Stock up on canned food and water. Know first aid. Have batteries, flashlights, medicine at hand.

Don't live in a seismically unsound building.

Duck, cover and hold.

And if it happens, check the gas mains before you light up a cigarette.

That's my advice for the night, I'm going to bed.

I remember my first quake here in the Bay Area. I heard a crack and then my apartment building started shaking. My thought process went some think like: What was that? Something must have hit the building. No, you can't hit a building so hard that it shakes, you would just crash through it. Oh, this must be an earthquake. Maybe I should do something. By the time I got to that last step, it eas all over. Fortunately it was only a magnitude 4ish affair, so there was no damage at all. If the big one hits I'll be the guy under the rubble pile slowly coming to the realization that, hey that was the big one!

My only earthquake story is a happy one, that's why I'm loth to share it. But if you insist: Pt. Mugu California, summer 1987, the day before my best friend and three other sailors I liked a good deal were killed in a helicopter crash in the mountains between Santa Paula and Ojai, A couple buddies of mine came to my house in Oxnard for a wake. It got late. I was in repose, when I was dashed to the floor. I cursed, looked around and saw that I was alone in the room. An earthquake had thrown me out of bed. However if God's wake up call hadn't happened I'd have been UA, (unauthorized absence) as it was I was a pretty sorry excuse for a Naval Aviator that morning. But at least I was there at Officer call.

Perhaps that quake you felt is just a tremble of things to come after November....

I slept through my first and only earthquake ever in Turkey, about 30 minutes outside Istanbul. 1988. Woke up and a lamp was on the floor, chair tipped over, etc.
