On the Katie Couric show today, President Obama made his first public statement about the ethically-challenged Charlie Rangel, calling the more than dozens of ethics charges levied against him "very troubling."

Here's Obama:

He's somebody who's at the end of his career...I'm sure that what he wants is to be able to end his career with dignity. And my hope is that it happens.

Meanwhile, House dems--perhaps worried about what toll the Rangel effect will take on them in November--are calling on the him to resign:

Calls for Rep. Charlie Rangel's resignation rained down on Capitol Hill late Friday from House Democrats who said more than a dozen ethics charges against the 20-term lawmaker showed a disregard for the rules and undermined the public's confidence in Congress.

What should Rangel do?

Part of me hopes he does resign; having him out of office can only be a good thing. .... Yet another part of me would enjoy seeing him go nuclear on Obama for throwing him under the bus, guaranteeing a circus from now til November ...

Hang on by his fingernails. Play the race card. Do a Blago, calling out his persecutors as hypocrites and putting the spotlight on their misdeeds as well. Burn bridges. Scorch the earth. Set up a Facebook page. Appear on The View.

Go for it, Charlie! Make us proud!

Hang in there, Charlie! I'm sure everything will work out just fine ... for the Republicans.

I was not surprised to hear Obama chime in on this one. He did approximately the same thing with Sherrod, although he pretended he didn't. Charlie Rangel is a notable albatross around the necks of the Democrats. Now he has some company with Maxine Waters. That was no surprise either. I suspect that Rangel will resign, although "dignity" for him is something long past attaining. I would really like to see him tried, but the truth is that there are so many like him (note the recent scandal with Kerry and his yacht, not as heinous, but completely stupid and arrogant which so many of them are.) I am not sure that a trial of Rangel would be any more productive than the impeachment of Bill Clinton, though it would be fun to watch, and, obviously, Obama would love to not have it happen. That in itself makes it consummation devoutly to be wished.

Read into this what ye will:

Democratic leaders and major party donors plan to hold a lavish 80th birthday gala for Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) at The Plaza Hotel in Manhattan next month, despite 13 ethics charges pending against the veteran lawmaker.

Lobbyists and other party donors received invitations this week to join Sens. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and New York Gov. David Paterson (D) at one of New York’s finest hotels to celebrate Rangel’s birthday.

Gubernatorial candidate Andrew Cuomo and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg are also listed as featured guests, according to an invitation viewed by The Hill.

It sounds like the wedding in the Godfather, all the leading lights coming to pay homage and ask for favors. One might even refer to it as a slime fest.
