As the November elections approach, magazines, newspapers and political websites are becoming filled with stories about how the GOP is moving too far right and risking its lead in the polls. There are also gleeful reports of a “Republican Civil War” and how the primary election victories of “radicals” over establishment types is a hopeful sign that voters discontent will harm both parties instead of only Democrats. It’s fun to watch a set of talking points drift into the media mainstream.

It’s desperation time on the Left. There will be a political bloodbath this fall as voters react to a government that's moving much to far to the left, and, yes, it does affect Republican candidates who are deemed to be too comfortable with that move. But trying to turn any of that into good news for Democrats is a gymnastic effort worthy of the finest Cirque du Soleil performer.

The frequency and shrillness of these stories will increase as Democrats march slowly to the electoral guillotine. It’s all they’ve got. I titled this post “Dems Whistling Past the Graveyard,” but that might be minimizing the situation. They’re belting out arias.

"Belting out arias" indeed. Pat, this goes a long way toward explaining the opera I inadvertently tuned in during the drive to Cleveland a couple of weeks ago. From what I heard, they are positively despondent. Makes it somehow easier to listen to now. Thanks.

Yes, things are going well when even a Democratic Senator tells voters that "we have managed to acquire $13 trillion of debt...(and) have nothing to show for it."
Still, one cannot help but fear that once in office, the GOP will strain its collective shoulder reaching across the isle, unable or unwilling to articulate or defend the principles of limited government and fiscal responsibility. And what happens when Obama's bipartisanship instincts really kick in and he, refusing to play politics, of course, starts demonizing his opponents as reckless-right-wing-radicals? Will it energize the GOP or make them fold? Does history leads one to be optimistic?

Here's a question... Do we think they will wait for the actual "bloodbath" to occur before turning to stories about the voters' "tantrum" or "madness", or how the American public is too stupid to be governed? And when will they finally blame it all on racism?

In support of Pat's point, Rubio has just opened a ten point lead over Crist (the single most unprincipled politican in America, after "the One"), Fiorina is in a dead-heat with Boxer, same thing in the Feingold race, same thing in the Murray-Rossi race in WA, Angle is running nearly even again with Reid, Blanche Lincoln is hanging in there (she's only 33 points down), and on and on. Of course, with all of the great economic news (unemployment nearly 10 percent, worst new home sales in 40 years, stock market dead in the water), I'm sure the Dems are on the verge of really pulling this one out.

Dear God, man. That started about a month ago. And before that, libs were turning really paranoid and nasty (why I left Slate). Dave, try some bouncy bel canto, like Barber of Seville, or L'elisir d'amore. You know, where they're not weeping and screeching. Certainly not Ariadne auf Naxos. Course it works better when you can watch it and understand what they're saying, but that could lead to another phone-destroying incident.

It's Denial. That's the first part of coping with the grief. Soon followed by Bargaining and Last Minute Conversions and, finally, with Tax Cutting.

Oh, wait. Not that last one.

Uhm, that started with the '94 revolution. Remember the "angry white voter[?]"

So those articles actually exist? I thought that was just my brain mixing words around as I skimmed headlines in iGoogle this morning. Surely, I told myself, the media isn't pushing the old "angry conservative infighting" meme again!

But hey, Time.com is running a paean to big government titled "How Obama's Stimulus is Changing America," in case the usual skewed election year coverage wasn't enough to remind us how off-the-rails the "mainstream" media is.
