First Velma Hart, now Shepard Fairey.

These are just two outspoken Democrats who have prominently announced, and not at a worst time, that they are losing hope in who they thought would be their messiah, President Barack Obama.

Hart, a middle class African American woman, told the president at a town hall in Washington DC last week:

I'm one of your middle-class Americans. And quite frankly, I'm exhausted. Exhausted of defending you, defending your administration, defending the mantle of change that I voted for, and deeply disappointed with where we are right now. I've been told that I voted for a man who was going to change things in a meaningful way for the middle class. I'm one of those people, sir, and I'm waiting. And I don't feel it yet.

And on Friday, Shepard Fairey, the famed artist behind the Obama "Hope" poster--which tea partiers have appropriated for their own use--told the National Journal, in an exclusive interview, that he too is losing hope in the president.

Fairey told the National Journal:

There's a lot of stuff completely out of Obama's control or any of the Democrats' control...But I think there's something a little deeper in terms of the optimism of the younger voter that's happening. They wanted somebody who was going to fight against the status quo, and I don't think that Obama has done that.

It looks like the tea partiers are not the only disillusioned ones.

Seems like if you wanted to change the status quo, you'd vote for someone other than a 60's throwback. Kids today, with their hula hoops and dungarees and Dr Pepper lipstick and the Duran Duran and I dunno what....

Those are some deep thoughts there, Shep.

~Paules, there's no evidence of Obama ever trying to incite mob anger or violence stoked by racial hatred and I would caution you against such conspiratorial language. On race, Obama has misspoken, causing discord and disunity, but he has never incited violence.

Of course later on dear Velma waffled on her accusations under pressure from the left. But what troubles me is the question: What were these people hoping for? A thriving economy, a plethora of good free market jobs, freedom from fear of terrorist threat through international strength and less government intrusion in our lives? Or were they looking for isolationist policy, more government programs and more income redistribution? My fear is the latter. I don't think these are examples of people deserting Obama because he changed course, (except maybe on Iraq and Afghanistan) but just that he's slow to get there. So I'm not celebrating. I don't think these are voters who will be tacking right in future elections, but even harder left.

No worries, Emily. I was frequently censored on the web in 2008 for suggesting that the main reason Obama would become president was because of his race. At the time the statement was considered "the truth which cannot be spoken." Eventually the idea was allowed to become mainstream.

I hope we do not have a reason to revisit my original post sometime in the future. Unfortunately, we may see the day when such awful possibilities become a reality. Enough for now.

The schadenfreude is on sale at the San Francisco Chronicle. As they choke and gag their way through the column, unable to bring themselves to endorse Carly, they actually delivered the old dog to the vet for the parting shot. For them to dump on Boxer is so....1906.

What's next ? When SNL does a takedown, perhaps a skit with Colbert and Boxer in nursing home or Pelosi taking her "for a ride" ( don't forget the cannoli), then we'll know .

Denise, I think you're exactly right. It will be interesting to see how Obama placates the disillusioned far left--if he placates them, that is, or if he steers a more moderate course in the wake of the spanking he and the Dems are sure to get in November.
