You don’t have to spend a lot of search engine time to come up with all sorts of unflattering portrayals of Conservatives. Ignorant. Racist. Divisive. Uneducated. Superstitious. All in all, the Left sees us as a hopelessly stupid bunch. However, despite their overwhelming superiority in the brains department, they always seem to allow these intellectual illiterates to outmaneuver them when it comes to defining who they are. When the Left thinks it’s loved (after the 2008 election, for example), they credit the wise and sophisticated American electorate for having the insight to do the right thing for the country. But when the Left falls out of favor (like now), it’s because this clever, conniving bunch on the Right has managed to distort their identity. Pretty smart for stupid people, don’t you think?

In an article in The New York Review of Books, Michael Tomasky claims “the Republicans have succeeded in branding the Democrats as not merely elitist but somehow alien and un-American, and the Democrats, from the President on down, have had almost nothing to say about it.” That’s quite an accomplishment for a bunch of unsophisticated rubes. Imagine making such a thing up out of whole cloth and selling it to millions of voters. And—wonder of wonders—the docile Left has had almost nothing to say about it (if we ignore all the speeches and editorials and articles and blogs on the subject).

If insanity is, indeed, repeating the same thing and expecting different results, the Left might want to start measuring for rubber wallpaper, because they’re doing it again; they’re insulting voters one day and expecting their support the next. It goes back at least as far as Eisenhower, who defeated that vastly superior intellect, Adlai Stevenson (twice), and continued through Reagan and Bush. These dumb candidates managed to fool a gullible public into voting for them by mischaracterizing their far more worthy opponents. How stupid can voters be?

So there you have it. When voters cast their ballots for more conservative candidates, it’s because they’re too dumb to see they’re being misled. Of course, they get smart again if they vote for a liberal candidate. And the intellectually-challenged conservative politicians are only smart when they put their limited brainpower to work distorting the records and agendas of liberals and selling that distorted image to their slow-witted followers. Oh, and by the way, the Left cares about all of the poor and middle-class voters of America and would appreciate their support—if these simpletons can manage to find their way to a polling place.

Sounds like a winning strategy to me!

Obama and Pelosi, unfairly called socialists...and somehow, over the same period, Tiger Woods unfairly characterized as a bad husband. Those darn ignorant mobs....

Over the long term it has been fun to watch the left celebrate the sagacity of the voting public when they do things like...vote for 'Hope & Change®', but then merely 24 months later castigate them for their obtuseness for deciding that they don't like how 'Change®' is working out.

In the short term it is even more fun to watch the weekly flip-flops on the left between the memes that the Right is too dumb to tie their shoes let alone vote correctly, and the Right is some super-intelligent evil conspiracy out to control the world....

To Mr. Tomasky: "If the brand fits, wear it." (Apologies for the mixed metaphor).

Another ball smacked over the stands and out of the park, Pat.

One minute we're lauded by the world for electing The One, but when someone mentions that it's clear that the emperor has no clothes we're "racists!"

Eric Holder said this on February 19, less than a month after the inauguration:

"Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot, in things racial, we have always been... essentially a nation of cowards."

Things are changing though, people are speaking up:

The liberals are asking us to give Obama time. We agree . . .
and think 25 to life would be appropriate. -- Jay Leno

America needs Obama-care like Nancy Pelosi needs a Halloween mask. -- Jay Leno

Q: Have you heard about McDonald's' new Obama Value Meal?
A: Order anything you like and the guy behind you has to pay for it. -- Conan O'Brien

Q: What does Barack Obama call lunch with a convicted felon?
A: A fund raiser. -- Jay Leno

Q: What's the difference between Obama's cabinet and a penitentiary?
A: One is filled with tax evaders, blackmailers, and threats to society.
The other is for housing prisoners. -- David Letterman

Reminds me of the story of Stevenson's second run against Ike. On election night, a well-wisher told him he had the vote of "every thinking person in the country." Stevenson's reply: "that's not enough -- I need a majority!" Good comeback, but it also nicely illustrates your point.

As amusing as it is to see one's opponents floundering in confusion, be warned. Such statements of contempt for the voters and disbelief at election results are the usual precursor to some serious messing about with the elections.

If the voters won't give them the results they seek they will find other ways.

I would argue that reality is 180% different from what the Libs claim is happening. THEY are the ones who hoodwinked a gullible public into voting for a post-racial, post-partisan moderate. Even some "intellectual" Republicans like David Brooks and Colin Powell fell for the ruse.

True conservatives never need to hide their agenda. It is the Dems and the moderate Repubs who appear to move right in order to get elected.

Well said. The well-worn term October Surprise comes to mind.

Well, we are stupid, here in NewYork; Schumer is golden, a hack like Cuomo is well in the lead, and Gilibrand isn't sweating.

I've actually had that conversation with a nice lefty in Hawaii. His conclusion was he thought, yes, Harvard does just hand out MBA's without much effort.

I'm reminded of the 2000 election when Democrats in Florida were basically telling the nation that their voters are too stupid and old to know how to vote. Some things never change (sigh).
