Politico says it has an exclusive: "Obama to include Republicans in hard-hitting convention":
Advisers to President Barack Obama are scripting a Democratic National Convention featuring several Republicans in a prime-time appeal to independents — and planning a blistering portrayal of Mitt Romney as a heartless aristocrat who “would devastate the American middle class,” Democratic sources tell POLITICO.
The program will feature lots of "real people" (for their sake, I hope they're more real than Joe Soptic) talking about how big government fueled by high tax rates and the attendant loss of liberty have helped them out in life -- "an auto worker whose job was saved, a student who benefited from college loans and an entrepreneur fueled by federal research-and-development funds." And each night there will be two people talking about a hot-button issue -- one lauding President Obama's actions and the other taking Mitt Romney to task.
So in talking about how Obama is a strong supporter of the largest abortion business in the country, it might feature a husband talking about how a Planned Parenthood pap smear -- not one of the hundreds of thousands of abortions they perform each year -- helped his wife out. Still, there will be lots of talk about the high holy sacrament of contraception.
Convention planners are considering featuring a centrist Republican leader on at least two of the three nights. Nightly remotes from swing states may include a CEO or “major Republican.” On Wednesday night, a “notable GOP woman” is among the possible participants. And on the final night, Democrats may include a Republican leader — someone like former Sens. John Warner or Chuck Hagel — or a GOP woman.
For the Thursday night contrast, they're seeking a Republican "leader" to laud President Obama's military accomplishments.
First off, I'm curious if they'll be able to pull this off -- will they be able to get multiple Republicans to praise Obama and trash Romney?
If they don't, I think that will be telling. But I'm also curious who we think would be on the short list for the pitch to speak at the Democratic Convention.
