Earlier today, North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue told a local rotary club about her stolen-from-the-mind-of-Fidel-Castro idea for how to fix the United States economy:

I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won't hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover. I really hope that someone can agree with me on that.

When the local paper ran the initial report, the headline for the piece was (as the url indicates) "Perdue Suggests Suspending Congressional Elections For Two Years. Was She Serious?" Now the headline declares that she was joking. Ha ha!

Though the full statement, which you can find here, doesn't have an ounce of ha-ha or humor in it, I think any press secretary worth his salt would use the "joke" spin. Mighty nice of the media to agree with that spin!

Be sure to tell us if you have any similar jokes about suspending the democratic process.

Excuse me? Is this a joke? A Sitting Governor actually calling for a suspension on elections? Mollie, are you making this up?

I think extending House terms to four years would be a good idea, but the thought of suspending elections entirely is horrifying.  If you think we have a constitutional problem, propose an amendment to fix it (like extending House terms), don't simply say "let's suspend the Constitution entirely."

No, no, no: this is a great idea. And you know why? Because there's no way, ever, ever, ever, that making members of Congress unaccountable would lead to higher taxes.

Nope. No way. No new taxes. Never.

This is the next step for them. Peter Orzag, Obama's former Budget Director has an article in the current issue of The New Republic calling for less democracy.

When liberals talk about politics being "broken" what they mean is that the Constitution is actually working as it was designed. What they want is the "professional technocrat" to rule, not govern.

Until then they would settle for the introduction of a parliament and a prime minister.

Am I wrong -- or is North Carolina not one of the states where redistricting is likely in 2012 to radically reduce the number of members of Governor Perdue's party in the House of Representatives?

Ok.  I guess I'm too old school.  This post-modern comedy escapes me -- I prefer the kind with humor in it.

The problem is she ruined the set up before getting to the punchline. You're supposed to lead-in by talking about suspending habeus corpus then work-up to suspending democracy.

It's all in the delivery.

This reminded me a lot of James Delingpole's post about 8 hours ago on "totalitarian urges" but now I see it was just a joke, so I guess all that is left is the rim-shot PUH-DUM-PUH.

Marco Rubio expressed similar sentiments at CPAC 2010!  :-)

This is far from amusing. The simple fact that this is spoken to is insane. Period...

You beat me to it, EJ. They don't like being told No.

Suffused with belief in their own goodness and wisdom, they can't understand why anyone would oppose them. Must be that the other guys are stupid and immoral. So, of course, we shouldn't have to listen to those other guys.

Yup...it is likely the biggest prize for the GOP in this round of redistricting.

Funny, I was thinking we should move the Congressional elections up a year for many of the same reasons.

Try Lucius Cornelius Sulla.

I hear he's amenable to these types of arrangements.

Is it any more insane than blowing off the passage of a federal budget for three straight years, the first such lapse in American history?

What is the matter with us that we keep electing nitwits like this?

You bring up a good point, but, yes, it's WAY more insane than that. Refusing to pass a budget so that you can advance your agenda under the radar is sleazy. But this is terrifying.

The thing I find most terrifying is that I really think Governor Purdue said something that's been kind of incubating in the minds of the American left for a while now.

It's far past the stage of incubation! See: the plethora of "Czars" (32 and counting) appointed in the BHO administration.

Last I heard, the GOP redistricting map threatens 4 Democratic seats, and folks are already expecting court challenges over the concentration of black voters in certain redistricted areas. Given that the legislature is controlled by Republicans, the state GOP will have much more control over the process, and that can't bode well for Perdue's party.
