Byron York tweets:

On CNN, Democratic strategist Hillary Rosen says of Mitt Romney: 'His wife has never worked a day in her life.'

You can watch it over at the Washington Free Beacon. Democrats sure know how to appeal to women voters, eh? By telling them that raising five boys to great success involves not a single day's work. Unbelievable.

I would put the raising of my children as one of the most important things I do, of course. It is far and away the most difficult. I don't believe Rosen is familiar with the work of raising children. It shows.

Mollie, my dear, it's called being wealthy. I would very much like to try that lifestyle but I am too busy working.

Byron York thinks the Romney camp acquitted themselves well on this.  You know, this might yet not be a catastrophe.

Someone correct me if I get it wrong. I've heard that single women with children (the moms most likely to work outside the home) vote heavily Democratic. Married women with children (the most likely to be stay-at-home moms) vote heavily Republican.

Therefore, Rosen (unwittingly) falls on her sword inadvertently pandering to the base while insulting voters the Dems aren't going to get anyway. In the smoke-free back rooms, the Dem strategists are saying to themselves "hey, she's onto something."

Look for this message to be refined and wielded constantly during the campaign.

Stealing. Such a harsh term. "Unintentional, unattributed maluse" has such a friendly liberalist euphemism ring to it.

I have always had two reasons to vote for Mitt in November:

1. Defeating Obama

2. Making Ann Romney First Lady

I knew Ms. Rosen years ago when she was with the RIAA.  Unlike Mrs. Romney, she's a nasty piece of work.

Fearless Leader must be cursing Hillary Rosen...she's led to Ann counterattacking through Twitter.  I sense the Dems have awakened a sleeping giant.

Hmmmm ... let's see ...

  • Last week, the jobs report comes out that says that Obama's "recovery" may have stalled, and that - you know what? - maybe the Obama brilliance isn't starting to kick in.
  • ObamaCare gets slapped down at the Supreme Court.

Hmmmm ... what is the news media focusing on?

How do you say "distraction" on CNN?

You're right about the way women vote but you even single moms with kids  dislike anti-motherhood rhetoric.

How does Obama campaign chief David Axelrod's statement fit into this Dem strategy?

"Also Disappointed in Hilary Rosen's comments about Ann Romney. They were inappropriate and offensive."

How does the campaign refine and wield a message that HQ has called "inappropriate and offensive"?

I think this is another kind of thing changed by micro-targetting. Rosen's comments should be heavily rebroadcast to SAHMs, particularly those with substantial broods. I think we win on this, because I don't think that there's a target group that would appreciate Rosen's words, nor any of the Ann responses, enough to be worth targetting them with that, rather than some unrelated woman hating thing.

Such a denouncement is a pretty good starting point to use the message later on-- gives you a good response if someone accuses you of disrespecting stay at home moms.

Example, although you'll have to imagine it done with skill:

"Democrats keep slandering Mrs. Mitt!"

"That's a lie- when someone claimed she'd never worked a day in her life, Obama's people said it was offensive and inappropriate to say such a thing about someone with the luxury to stay at home and watch the kids.  Cook.  That kind of thing.  Attacking someone for never working outside the home is a horrible thing, even if it is an unusual option most women don't have."

<devil's advocate mode = on>

I imagine that it's a little easier to raise five children when one's husband is a billionaire.

<devil's advocate mode = off>

Of course, that's NOT the point that Rosen was making.

(Edit: The Romney's estimated net worth is about $250 million.  Mea culpa.)

Not to SAHMs, but WAHMs (Work At Home Moms). That has become a more common identification, at least it has on the mommy blogs I tend to frequent.

It will be polished into a variant of the politics of envy. Some third tier comentators with 7 degrees of separation from Obama will say "You know Rosen had a point. Ann Romney had the luxury of staying at home because her husband was a millionaire but she really can't and doesn't understand the struggles of real moms whether they work outside the home or work inside home."

Posted too late. The "Ann had the luxury..." meme has already hit the MSM echo chamber. Look for variants to play until election day. Any odds that this will be Maureen Dowd's column this week?

Yeah, I was just driving and heard the more-liberal kid on the KIRO talk team use it as a launch point for more attacks.

Because women that go to Princeton and Harvard Law, then get make-work positions, are really in touch with trying to figure out how folks struggle to make ends meet.

So liberals have been chomping at the bit for months, waiting for the Repubs to settle on a candidate. They have had all this time to come up with angles of attack on Romney, once he was the clear nominee, and THIS is what they come out of the box with?

The context of Rosen's remarks are this: "His wife has never actually worked a day in her life. She’s never really dealt with the economic issues that a majority of the women in this country are facing—in terms of how do we feed our kids, how do we send them to school, and how do—why we worry about their future."

In my experience, men may bring home the paycheck in traditional families, but women manage the family finances, because they're the ones that do most of the day-to-day spending. It was certainly that way in my home when I was growing up, and in the homes of most of my friends.

It's entirely possible, then, for a stay-at-home mom to be quite conversant with real-world economics, just as it is possible for a man who earns a paycheck to be completely ignorant of economics.
