Delaware, Shmelaware. Let's Talk About Florida.
A few clicks below, Mike Murphy is taking on heavy fire from the Ricochet membership. Which he can handle, believe me. As one of the proprietors of this crackling conversation, I can't tell you how fun it is to participate in the scrum. And I know that later on, when we're all exhausted and tuckered out, we'll shake hands and be civil, because that's the kind of people we are.
In the meantime, though, let's agree on one thing: Charlie Crist, who is trying to become the next senator from Florida, is a greasy pile of odious politics. He's a grasping and meretricious oil slick. He's everything that's wrong with the way people govern and get elected in this country.
But if things keep moving the same direction, he's going to lose to Marco Rubio, and a lot of the credit has to go to the Tea Party. From Reuters:
Republican candidate Marco Rubio has opened a clear lead in a Florida Senate race, becoming the latest Tea Party favorite to benefit from voter anger at Washington, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found on Wednesday.
Six weeks before November 2 congressional elections, Rubio leads state Governor Charlie Crist, an independent, by 40 percent to 26 percent among likely voters, the poll found. Democrat Kendrick Meek trails at 21 percent.
So in the middle of the Civil War over Delaware, let's pause to raise a toast to Florida, give credit to Tea Party enthusiasm, and keep our fingers crossed for Rubio.

Who knew Delaware could get hotter than Florida?
Why not raise a toast to Delaware and give credit to their Tea Party Enthusiasm while keeping fingers crossed?
Re: Delaware, Shmelaware. Let's Talk About Florida.
Fair enough, Jimmy. And I'll do that when Christine O'Donnell opens a clear lead on her opponent. As I said, I hope she wins. I really, really do.

I'll toast to that, Rob. And add that it would be nice to see Republicans join in supporting O'Donnell en masse, just the way some would have wanted had she lost. I would, for one, have accepted the outcome had it been the other way. She didn't just win. She creamed him. Now Mr. Freidersdorf cries about those nasty talk radio hosts and Mr. Murphy complains about Palin and Demint. Where's the love, man? Oh, and how about 6 or 8 months ago? Who supported Rubio and who supported Crist? I know who "the establishment" supported. He's the one who dropped the party and is losing by 16 points right now.

Re: Delaware, Shmelaware. Let's Talk About Florida.
Meretricious has always been one of my favourite words, because it sounds so complimentery while really meaning quite something else.
mer·e·tri·cious
–adjective 1. alluring by a show of flashy or vulgar attractions; tawdry. 2. based on pretense, deception, or insincerity. 3. pertaining to or characteristic of a prostitute.
Origin:
1620–30; < L meretrīcius of, pertaining to prostitutes, der. of meretrīx prostitute = mere-, s. of merēre to earn + -trīx -trix; see -ous
Rob, a fine example of calling someone what they really are without stepping into the gutter. Isn't English a wonderful tool?

I love meretricious. Thanks for noticing, Cas.
And cdor, that's a fair point about respecting -- even celebrating -- the outcome of a race you hoped would go a different way. The Crist betrayal is a perfect example of what you're talking about.
As I said, I hope she wins. I hope she comes out swinging, puts the character stuff to bed fast, and talks taxes and spending until the other side cries for mercy.

The Delaware Moment sounds like a page-turning political novel. Cheers to Rubio! Glad to see him open up a lead. He's got big things in store for him.

"Delaware, Shmelaware"
Trying to recapture the "China, Schmina" magic, Rob? I have to say, it seems more like Ghostbusters II than Godfather II. I mean, it's Delaware for crying out loud. As Wayne and Garth once said, "Hi. I'm in Delaware."
Anyway, I'm very happy to hear that the Tea Party folk are giving Chuck the electoral drubbing he so richly deserves. Should we start calling Mr. Rubio "Agent Anti-Orange?"

Re: Delaware, Shmelaware. Let's Talk About Florida.
I must say I was disappointed to see Rubio rush to a microphone to denounce SB 1070, then flip-flop and obfuscate.
Promising guy, but that troubles me.

Having lived in Delaware... Oh, I do get around... It's not surprising how blue it is. It's made it's living on the Federal Tax Code. Fifty percent of all publicly traded companies are incorporated in this tiny, tiny state.

Re: Delaware, Shmelaware. Let's Talk About Florida.
Rush's point about overlooking the Buckley rule during years like this seems a strong one. Think of where Rubio would be today if more conservatives had settled six months ago for Creep-bag Crist.
In Ohio, the Republican Party leadership is too much Crist and too little Rubio. I've just assumed for as long as I've cared (eg. the decade I've been able to vote) that GOP nominees will generally be aggravating squishes, which makes it easier to deal with the facts that none of us can see the future and fair-minded conservatives might pick different horses.
No matter what, a Senator DeWine or Voinovich beats the hooves off a Sherrod Brown.

Forgive me. I'm under a lot of pressure.
But in the meantime: Agent Anti-Orange is a great great line. Rubio should start using it.

The last time I saw this much excitement over Delaware politics, Rev Jim was watching the legislature debate whether to be called Delawareans or Delawarites on Taxi. (The Delaweenians never had a chance.)

Who would have imagined Rob, that you and Mr. Robinson started this conservative enterprise and surprise, surprise you got actual conservatives to post here.

That is exactly right. Spence Abraham is better than Debbie Stabenow, Jim Jeffords is better than Bernie Sanders, Dick Lugar is better than Evan Bayh, and my five year old daughter is better than the entire CA congressional delegation.

Yeah, think of where we would be if Bob Taft hadn't been elected governor?

In college, one of my classic cocktail party lines was, "Who lives in Delaware anyway? Has anyone ever even met someone from Delaware?"
I stopped saying it when I finally met someone from Delaware. And I now see that the line I found so funny back in the day must've only been funny after two or three drinks.

Not at all. As I've said, it's possible to be a conservative and think that Christine O'Donnell is a deeply flawed candidate with a lot of really problematic baggage.

Re: Delaware, Shmelaware. Let's Talk About Florida.
Knowing nothing about Rubio or Crist, I don't know who I would've supported -- the only Senate candidates who I know I want to win are Rand Paul and anyone (even everyone!) running against Barbara Boxer. That said, if Rob, with whose judgments I often concur, feels this strongly about Rubio, I'm tentatively convinced. Yay Marco Rubio.
But I hardly see why that race would have any bearing on my criticism of talk radio hosts. My problem isn't that they're a utilitarian plus or minus for political candidates or ideological causes. That's irrelevant. I criticize them for specific things when they're distorting the truth, misleading their audiences, or being egregiously unfair to other commentators.
As I've said before, I think suspending all critical judgment for ideological allies is part of them problem!

Just so you know what you'd be getting into: she does believe in Unicorns, Mermaids and Pegasi. She doesn't believe that the president rides any of them as steeds. She knows that every handsome, 30-40 something light-skinned black man she sees is the president. She definitely thinks that we exist only to get her stuff she wants. So, I'd characterize her as moderate Dem, or a liberal Rep.
