Amid all of the hype over the presidential election, it is worth noting that today is Election Day in Virginia, New Jersey, Mississippi, and Kentucky. Ohio voters also go to the polls to weigh in on the state's public employee union bill.

Because this is an off-off year election, I'll admit that I haven't been paying as close attention to this election as to previous ones. In Virginia, however, it is almost certain that the control of the State Senate hangs in the balance tonight. Democrats seized the Senate by a one-seat margin back in 2007, which they widened to two in a special election to replace Ken Cuccinelli. Republicans thus only need two seats to split the upper chamber- Lt. Governor Bolling will act as tie-breaker- and three to win control outright. This might be the night Virginia's Ricochoise have been waiting for; Northern Virginia-based blogger Ben Tribbet is predicting that the GOP has a 75% chance of taking of the Senate. One thing's for sure, I'll be holding my breath when polls close tonight.

I did my part in Virginia early this morning, even though I visited THREE polling places before I was able to cast a ballot. (Redistricting: Argh!) I'll be watching the returns!

I was voter number one at my Virginia polling place.  Getting very sleepy now.

It is also election day in my county in North Carolina. The Democrats have already swept city-wide elections in the October voting round. There is one school board district that is up for grabs, but it is unlikely to go anything other than Democratic. The ground game the Democrats are putting up in this area is very well executed. No doubt they are in training for 2012. A large swing towards Democrats in a light-turnout local election in my area.

Indeed! Apparently just 86 votes put the GOP contender over the top against the Democrat incumbent in the last contentious Senate race. Will they stand up to recount? Oh, how I hope they will. Rest assured, though: The WaPo has already determined that neither party emerged with a "mandate."

Well, the Democrats certainly didn't.

If Va is anything like Wa, the dems will count until they reach their desired outcome then declare any further counting an attempt to disenfranchise someone.
