Jonah Goldberg, over at the Corner on NRO, makes an interesting prediction:

...going by the Obama campaign’s mood and desperation to change the building narrative (plus a couple interesting conversations), I would not be at all surprised if either in the next couple days or in the aftermath of a bad Biden performance, the Obama campaign comes out with some nasty piece of oppo research or some other desperate attempt to change the story. “Beware the stink bomb,” a prominent conservative journalist told me this morning.

I ask Michael Barone a version of this question today on the podcast.

I'm looking very forward to hearing from Barone.  Can't wait for the podcast.  You better not be podcast teasing.

You wonder if they were saving some 'Bain horror story' for just this eventuality. And it's not as if Obama's history shows any gentlemanly reluctance. Besides, I'm sure that the Obama media is working overtime.

I'm betting that NBC comes out first. And they'll try to put it out before Brian Williams starts talking, so that he doesn't have to lead with the debate.

How many people are they going to say Mitt killed this time?

Which this is a point I made over on Professor Rahe's thread

"The Chickens Come Home to Roost"

I think it is inevitable, and fully part of the re-election plan. Mr. Obama has used this ploy successfully in his Illinois senate race and (twice) in his US Senate race.

And they know they can count on the media to flog it for all its worth. When I said this over on the other thread, there was a reply to the effect that everyone would know this was a desperation tactic and no-one would take it seriously. Doesn't work when you have an "R" after your name.

My prediction is it will be something to do with Bain Capital, and it wont come too early - the campaign and the press (redundant) will want to minimize the ability for the Romney camp to defuse the situation.

Hey, I did hear that Dan Rather had bought a new printer ...

Oh, I have no doubt Jonah is right. If Mitt sees a debate bounce, I expect "the full Chicago" response.

But its also one of the reasons I suspect we've seen a dearth of ads in some states at this point. Romney is keeping some powder dry.

Speaking of which, did we ever find out who made Jack Ryan's divorce records public?

My guess at the stink bomb?

Mitt did too much LDS back in the 60s.

I've scanned comments (NRO etc.) and want to know if anyone commented on Obama's "big gaffe" about businesses getting big tax breaks to move factory's overseas? Romney caught it ("I must have hired the wrong accountant....") but have the pundits/media discussed it? Clearly Obama mixed up the critical point on taxes - high taxes in America on businesses have been driving jobs overseas where taxes, wages and expenses are lower. I thought that statement by Obama said it all.

Granted his body language (slouching against podium), his general sadness and lack of energy were more disturbing. And his comment to "sweetie" about next year's anniversary was more jarring. And he seemed to hang his head and agree with Mitt on his mistake of putting all his political capital into "Obamacare" and his inability to work with others in Congress. No, using a few Republican ideas does not make what happened okay.

In all seriousness I expect the MSM narrative to crown Obama as the "Comeback Kid" if he shows any kind of pulse in the next two debates.

They will probably also weight their polls even more heavily Democrat to show there was no post debate bounce for Mitt.

I'm not sure why but I am still in complete disbelief at the almost surreal debate last night. It all seemed so unbelievable.

The reaction of the media this morning has been priceless.

But honestly, how bad can anything related to Bain Capital really be? They collect money from rich people, invest it as best they can in businesses that they can improve and make more effective and efficient, and reap the rewards. This includes firing people, but it makes the business healthier. They maximize their advantage under the law and get really, really rich.  And lots of people would love to work there.

To really damage him, it would have to be something much more personal and much worse... like a second family in Mexico.

Full-throated Chicago is on its way I'm sure. Someone I know pointed this out: "Obama's got the Chicago way mastered: Create the "up is down, left is right" fog, and then whack anybody trying to clear the air." Problem is, Mitt unplugged the fog generator last night and boy it was embarassing.

As much as Romney wasn't my candidate, I give props to Ann Coulter, and I think she's right when she says Mitt's the right guy against Chicago thuggery: They got nothin' on this Mormon.

The big danger with the smear campaign is that the non-political-wonks will see it for what it is -- a desperate attempt by an incompetent President of an incompetent party.

If that happens, it will backfire on them big time.

Props to Ann Coulter. This is the advantage of running two Boy Scouts (or is it Eagle Scouts?) on the ticket. It's the Mormon Missionary and Opie Griffith. Really, what could the Chicago machine plausibly fabricate, I mean, dig up?

The October Surprise?

Obama issues an executive order claiming he wins the last two debates by 80% and then cancels them......
