turkish-jets-hit-pkk-army-says-more-to-come-2011-08-18_l

I'm going to direct you to Hürriyet Daily News, although there is no English-language news source at this point in Turkey that I trust--nor a Turkish one, for that matter. This is not because of the integrity of the journalists, but because I just got back from watching yet another police raid on yet another news outlet. I assume that the journalists will be charged as Ergenekon conspirators, and no doubt they were pumping out a steady stream of nationalist-Leftist, anti-American propaganda, so everyone will shrug--who cares about press freedom, they were against Americans. The idea that Americans are for press freedom--for everyone--will look like a cynical nonsense.

This American loathes the PKK and has no doubt that they are terrorists. But this American will take "advanced democracy" in Turkey seriously when she sees evidence of real respect for property rights, due process, freedom of speech, and government transparency. Not seeing much of that these days.

The body count is going up every time I check the news. The only thing I'm sure of is that many more will die by the end of this.
