This just in from our beloved Dave Carter, who wanted me to know why he probably wouldn't be posting for a couple of days.  Dave, always thinking of Ricochet--even under duress.

Dear Peter,

Well, the bad news is that I'm in the hospital again with another kidney stone....

The good news that my nurse is interested in joining Ricochet.  He's a very conservative gentleman, and anxious to learn more about Ricochet, which I am happy to help grow, one stone at a time.

Pass the pain meds,

Dave

Spare a prayer for Dave.  He may remain the very picture of good cheer, but this hurts.

God bless and speedy recovery, Dave.

I've heard that cranberry juice or extract pills can support kidney function.  Also, as another Ricocheter said, drink lots of water.

My cousin had one.  He said when it popped out, it was in the shape of a half-folded pocketknife.  Yeah, that could hurt.

I'll await the return of your analysis when your urinalysis is clear.  God speed that stone to it's fate in the trash.

Being married to an LSU lady, I understand Louisianan somewhat. I think this has something to do with football season starting in a little more than 3 months?

Get well, Dave!

Dave Carter: Taking advantage of the reprieve just after the last dose of joy juice. Thank you all so very much for the well wishes. Feels like family here. And on behalf of my pain meds, I'd like to say, hjjjg. Jfajsc schnorofk dj ookf. Going back to sleep now. · 3 hours ago

Dave,

Cranberry juice is a well-known preventative for kidney stones. But--cranberry juice is typically sold as "cranberry juice cocktail," which has far more sugar than cranberry juice. If you're trying to watch your sugar intake, that can be a problem.

The natural foods section of a grocery store will likely sell 100% cranberry juice. It's relatively pricey, and if you drink it straight it'll take the enamel off your teeth. Buy a two-liter bottle of seltzer water for each 32-oz. bottle of cranberry juice. I find that one part juice to 3 parts seltzer is about perfect--but I'm from New England. YMMV.

I recognize the problem--not a lot of truck stop shops have a natural foods section. Order from Amazon.com, and bring your inventory with you.

If your body is forming stones, you have to deal with the issue. It won't just go away. Cranberry juice probably isn't Alphonse's idea of what to serve with jambalaya--but it really is the cure for what ails ya.

And by the way--it's also terrific for clearing your throat before you sing....

Gandalf the Wizard had this problem once, I recall. It was that scene on the bridge ...

Sorry.

A fellow stoner, let me pass on to you, Dave, the advice a doctor gave me once when I had a kidney stone. "Drink lots of beer and do jumping jacks.". Personally, I think the beer was sufficient.
