Daryl Hannah & the Jewel Thieves
My piece in WaPo today, in which I make light of an important issue. (If the comments are anything to go by....) It starts like this:
I think most of us had the same reaction when we heard the news that actress Daryl Hannah had been arrested:
Hey, what did she steal?
Turns out, Hannah didn’t steal anything. She was arrested Tuesday near the White House for protesting a proposed oil pipeline from Canada to the Gulf Coast. It was a sit-in situation, not a shoplifting situation. Hannah and a handful of other activists sat down in the park across from the White House and refused to move until the Park Police arrested them (and enough reporters had arrived).
But I think we can be forgiven for our initial reaction. These days, when celebrities are arrested, it’s usually for disorderly conduct, smacking someone around or, as was the case with perennial arrestee Lindsay Lohan, stealing jewelry. And it’s always a big deal, with the attendant TMZ photographers, live news feeds and salacious stories.
And it goes on from there. And don't miss the comments.

Apparently you are a desperate, brain-freezing monkeyboy!
And I'm only halfway through, oh golly that's funny.

Re: Daryl Hannah & the Jewel Thieves
I agree that it is nice when a celebrity at least gives the appearance of having thought about an issue. My question for Ms. Hannah would go something like this: Knowing that Alberta has 170 billion barrels of proven oil reserves (h/t Wall Street Journal, July 8, 2011), wouldn't we rather purchase our hydrocarbons from a democratic, friendly, non-Jihadist neighbor, create thousands of jobs on both sides of the border by building a pipeline (I could swear I've heard something about unemployment recently) and transport that oil via the aforementioned pipeline instead of buying it from inherently unstable areas such as the Persian Gulf (and shipping it on those nasty tankers)? According to the EIA.gov website, in the period Jan-Apr 2011, the US imported 4.206 million barrels per day from OPEC nations. By my math, the proven reserves in Alberta would replace OPEC imports for 40418 days (or over 110 years). So even if Canada kept 50% of those reserves for domestic consumption, we could have over 55 years of replacement oil supply. That sounds too good to be true, only it's not.

In The Age of Transgressive Art, Rob has transgressed too far. He has mocked beautiful people doing good.

Rats. There's a moderator who's deleting all the angry, profanity-laced character attacks on Rob.
Besides, I wanted to be the brain-freezing monkeyboy. Darn it.

I carried the Post as a paperboy in the early '70's. I can recall getting up at 0400 on Sunday mornings because the Sunday edition was four inches thick and weighed in at five pounds per copy. I noticed on my last trip to DC that the Post is a mere slip of its former self which is something both conservatives and liberals can celebrate. The Post might have less influence than ever, but it's saving trees in the process! A good corporate citizen, indeed.

I'm sorry Rob, because I couldn't bother with the comments section, to complete my assignment. I didn't need to; what you wrote was just about right.
I love people like Hannah and Ed Begley, Jr., as they don't just talk the talk. They also walk the walk and they often have interesting things to say, in is an otherwise vapiid community.
Brian McMenomy, I could save you the trouble, as I already know her answer, having listened to her. She is of the genuine belief that we could generate enough energy from waste, within our borders, to get off fossil fuels altogether. I think she is completely wrong, but she does bring some facts and experience to a discussion.
We sometimes forget that we really do need to do "all-of-the-above", that there is real waste in our utilization of what otherwise decomposes in landfills or fields. I'm not a fan of any waste. While I believe she is very sincere and pretty well informed, I am also aware that she is wrong and just doesn't get the mathematics associated with our energy needs. Still, I find her real effort charming.

"If only Hannah had worn the mermaid outfit."
I like to think that on occasion she tries on that outfit to see if it still fits, like most Ladies and Their Wedding dresses.

I agree. I find all of this get-arrested-sitting-in stuff irritating, but I admire her dedication. Disagree with her ideas and method, but prefer it to ripping off jewelry stores.

Brilliantly put.

Re: Daryl Hannah & the Jewel Thieves
I saw her once on O'Reilly (I think it was) talking about bio-diesel, and she seemed sweet and genuine and practical-minded. But getting arrested by the D.C. park police and paying a $100 fine over the building of a pipeline? A languid smile and long blonde hair at fifty just can't make up for the celebrity silliness of pretending we can go green on a dime.

Re: Daryl Hannah & the Jewel Thieves
For what it's worth, Rob, I think you're so right about the outfit. It would have caused a huge splash if she had worn the mermaid suit, and it would have shown that she was more interested in helping the cause than protesting for the cause. That's what so many celebrities seem to do: confuse our delight in watching the roles they play with wanting them to be regular human beings.

Re: Daryl Hannah & the Jewel Thieves
You realize that the Keystone Pipeline exists to shoot desperate American conservatives north across the border to Alberta, Canada if they need to escape the craziness. In return, we'll send our liberals SOTB

And in a perfectly orchestrated world, Anthony Michael Hall steps in to prove Rob's point that most celebrity arrests are for less-than-noble causes...
