Dad Punishes Daughter, Gets 73,000 "Likes" on YouTube
Two million YouTube views in two days. Dad punishes daughter.
And I am violating the Ricochet Code of Conduct by posting this. But it's really blowing up on the internets, and it's exactly the kind of thing I'd like the smartest, wisest group anywhere to chime in on.
So, call it Executive Privilege. Since this isn't really a democracy, I'll accept lashes from Peter and Peter alone.
Still: fair warning: There's some salty language, but it's PG-13, I promise.
I honestly don't know what to think about this. So far, he's got 73k "Likes" on YouTube and only 5500 "Dislikes," so maybe that's saying something. I have to confess, though, that I got seriously creeped out at the end. Maybe it was the use of the "hollow points." Or am I being a squish?
Special Note: Sharp-eyed Ricochet member PracticalMary beat me to this post by several hours. Apologies to her! If you commented there, feel free to cut and paste here....

He could have done it with a little less overkill, but I don't think he expected 2 million hits. In today's reality show culture, this is nothing though. He should have censored her speech - that would have been more effective.
It has to hurt about the old-age crack and the fact that he spent time fixing her laptop to see this type of post on Facebook from her the next day.
Things to watch for. A) we find out a lot more about these people and B) They get a reality show - working title Laptop Cowboy

That title sounds overly sexual to me. Like it's a reality show about strip clubs.

With affection, I vote for "squish". But then I'm a country boy and nothing about guns intimidates me (as long as they're not pointed at me).
Hollow points have been demonized by the popular culture to almost mythical status. They're often better man-stoppers than hard-ball ammo, but I guarantee they made no difference in the amount of damage done to the laptop. He just wasted some expensive ammo when cheaper target rounds would have done as well.
As for the main topic, I expect his little video is going to backfire on him. I don't have a problem with him shooting the laptop, but the chances of his daughter learning much from him doing so wouldn't be good even if it had been kept private. Taking it public is likely to horribly scar their relationship, perhaps beyond repair given the millions of viewers this thing has received.

Here's one for you: One Christmas we were over at my in-laws house opening presents and my, then, seven year-old was pouting and very loudly counting how many presents the other kids had versus how many he had. No amount of scolding phased him. My wife and I were mortified. When we got home I told him to get his favorite gift from his grandparents and he proudly brought me a toy monster truck. I proceeded to tell him that his behavior that night was unacceptable and would never ever happen again. Then, right in front of him I smashed his truck to unrecognizable pieces.
Christmases have been a joy ever since.

Tommy De Seno: A little soul bearing here and I'm hesitant to do so considering the comments.
I did the same thing to my son's x-box. Only I used my hands (real men don't fight with weapons).
Tommy, for some reason this just seems different to me. I think what you did comes under the heading of "intervention!"
Yes. I used to think reports about internet and x-box addiction were loony until I saw it happen to my son. It seemed to me he got to a point where he couldn't stop playing it, like a junkie. Besides his school work even his interest in sports and friends waned. I tried so many ways to get him away from it but it pulled on him like a black hole.
I started to realize that the only way to get him off it was to have him go cold turkey. When I saw that "F" on his report card, I felt like it was a parental duty to kill that evil interloper who was ruining my son's life.
I smashed it to protect him from it. I hated that box.

Yes! That's exactly what troubles me about it. It has nothing to do with teaching her a lesson. It's just getting her back. Thanks for putting it so clearly, Lucy. · 26 minutes ago
"Teaching her a lesson" was precisely the point. Frankly, she deserves lashes on the backside with a switch.

I don't think I like what I saw in this video. I have no children I don't know how good or bad a parent I would be or what I would actually do to discipline my kids. I just know I would not post my self that angry on face book. I mean you could feel it in his voice. He was mad. He might be right to be, but you should not act in anger, ever. It makes you petty and cruel and mean.
This was embarrassing for me to watch. It was like a loud public argument in a restaurant, where the whole place goes quite as two people scream at each other. It is uncomfortable...

Well, consider this: She has no computer anymore. She's never going to see this clip.

FeliciaB: ...
A good father would have established a close relationship with his child by setting healthy boundaries when the child was young. His lack of sticking to healthy boundaries created the spoiled, self-absorbed teenager. Judging by the video he posted, I get the sense, he doesn't really understand what an adult really is since he's acting like a vengeful teenager himself. · 7 minutes ago
You've expressed perfectly the response that I had to watching this video. What is there to like about a father directing a temper tantrum at his 15 year old daughter. Parents should be role models and provide guidance for their kids, unfortunately, this father looks like he is in need of adult guidance.

It's still better than what some of our parents and grandparents received as punishment. My father reminded me that when he was growing up his grandfather made him pick his own switch and if Grandpa Gandy didn't like the one selected he'd send one of the siblings to select the next one.

My mother when she got angry with me would take whatever my most prized possession and break it. She took one of my Beatles albums and tried to break it (it only bent and of course was finished) she would grab my guitar ..I finally broke it myself I got so tired of that pathetic dance. I remembered she took my Dad's hole-in-one trophy out on the driveway and crushed it under her heel.
She's gone now and she really was a great woman, we all have flaws. I still play guitar and listen to the Beatles and I haven't thought of these things in years. Some people are just destructive.
Now who hasn't fantasized about smashing a TV? I have.
I watched some of a Chris Rock comedy special last night. He was wondering what it would be like if bullets cost $5,000 each. No more innocent bystanders! I 'm gonna kill you...as soon as I can afford it, I'm gonna get another job, save my money and I'm common' back for you chump!

Here's something those of you who do not have kids need to remember. If you ever have them they will not necessarily be like your friends' and neighbors' kids and will not respond to the same forms of discipline your friends and neighbors use. Some kids are rebellious until they are well into adulthood, then something clicks and they remember and value what you taught them. Some are born trying to please you. Kids are weird, parents are weirder, and at least half of your parental efforts will suck.
This is truth.

Gus and Tommy,
I think there may be a difference with sons and daughters in this one.
Generally I approve of the point of the video, everything except for the use of the handgun. First for artistic reasons it was just underwhelming, in that holes just appeared in the box with small noises. The true power of a firearm was underpresented. A big hammer would have been lessy creepy and more satisfying in that there would be plastic bits all over and it would look smashed.
My dad had a temper too, and my teenage years werent a picnic, I promptly moved out at the earliest convienent opprotunity, and my dad and I have had a great relationship ever since.

Franco- That's the trouble with Windows .45 you never how may rounds are left before it crashes.. Dad ought to try the William Tell approach and win some trust with dear daughter.. an apple a day keeps the.45 away.

Considering how close he was to his target I thought his group could have been a little tighter.

Agreed. It is nature over nurture all the way. I have 4 children. Each raised in the same house with the same parents having the same opportunities.
They couldn't be more different.
I can see some of the influences of nurture. But that's superimposed upon the base that nature first provided.

Actually, I know people who would respond the same way, with no qualms. They wouldn't see the problem with it. I don't think that it was all vengefulness and spite. I think the father, in his straightforward, blue-collar manner was making it clear that the cyber snottiness was no longer going to be happening.
I would just confiscate the laptop and any electronic toys. Teens don't need those, anyway. A public apology from her on Facebook would be warranted. She'd have to earn everything she got, plus do more chores at home. And then I'd arrange for our family to hang around families who lived more traditional lives: gardening, farming, etc. A lot of these families go to my church, and they all seem to homeschool and their children work harder than I do. They grow into personable adults with unbelievable work ethics.
She would also be required to visit third-world countries or watch documentaries on them, and read history books.
The line from her that grated most: "I have to go to bed at ten because I don't have energy to stay up and do anything else." What suffering.

On the other hand, any young man who ever takes this girl on a date will have enormous incentive to be a perfect gentleman.
