Current TV, founded a few years ago by Al Gore and Joel Hyatt, has modest ratings, if you define modest as not even ranked in Nielsen's Daily Cable Charts. However, that is about to change with the arrival of my old pal, Keith Olbermann, on June 20. As many of you know, I introduced Keith to network TV audiences on my old CBS late night talk show, so I enjoy following his career, much as American Idol judges must swell up with pride when they hear Carrie Underwood on the radio. He will host a nightly show on Current TV and serve as its Chief News Officer. (I would have named him "News Czar", but that's just the kind of guy I am.) According to Olbermann, “Nothing is more vital to a free America than a free media, and nothing is more vital to my concept of a free media than news produced independently of corporate interference.” Al and Keith together. I can't help but feel as if I've played a small part in this match made in heaven.

Think of it as your contribution to bankrupting Al Gore.

Current TV sounds a whole lot like the Brits' "Pirate Radio", with the same fate: the ship is destined to sink.

Pat Sajak: Current TV... has modest ratings, if you define modest as not even ranked in Nielsen's Daily Cable Charts.

Unlike internet news sites, A.C. Nielsen doesn't give anything away. To be rated by Nielsen a network (or local station) must subscribe to their service. Gore and Mini-Metzenbaum* probably feel the news would be so bad, why pay for it?

*For non-Ohioans, Joel Hyatt's father-in-law was the late Sen. Howard Metzenbaum. Like most politicians he felt the seat was hereditary but got thumped 53-39% by Mike DeWine in 1994. And you have my word on it.

If a political network falls in the forest, does it make a sound?

If you're uncomfortable with "News Czar", maybe "News Commissar" would fit?

Pat you must feel more like Dr. Frankenstein than an American Idol judge.

Gotta go find my torch.

This is sounding like a Seneca - Nero, or Aurelius - Commodus sort of thing.

Yes... the nexus of history. One never knows... proud indeed!

If a political network falls on Olbermann, would anybody care?
