Haven't had time to read the ruling yet, but Judge Royce Lambeth of the DC District Court has blocked President Obama’s 2009 executive order that expanded embryonic stem cell research, on the grounds that it violated a ban on federal money being used to destroy embryos. The ruling is based on the Dickey-Wicker amendment that has been in every appropriations bill since 1996.

Sounds like a victory for the rule of law, not to mention respect for life. Is this another good issue to take into the midterm elections?

I'm with Mitch Daniels on this one: give the culture wars a rest. When your house is burning down, it's no time to argue about the color of the drapes.

And I think this issue is just too much of a reminder of how Republicans maneuvered their way into irrelevancy: they yammered endlessly about things that had no practical effect upon the lives of most people, while the Choo-Choo to fiscal hell hurtled down the track.

I'm on board with Kenneth. Even though I'm happy with the result, it's better to keep this whole issue under the radar, since it requires a sophisticated explanation--which Americans typically tune out--to disprove the silly war-on-science droning that would soon enough arise if this becomes a campaign topic.

We don't need to rally the base; they do, so let's not give them an issue that could serve that purpose.

Right. This is not an issue for the '10 elections. Just hammer the economy and the size of government. Applaud and encourage the right decisions on the subject, but parading it will gain not one more vote.

Four for four. Ignore the issue.

Republicans didn't lose the house and presidency because they put too much time and effort into pro-life issues. Even if you ignore the aspect about the importance of selecting and confirming judges with some respect for the law, most Americans are pro-life and Hispanics, generally, are very pro-life.

Obviously the economy is the issue to hammer this fall, but ignoring the cultural issues between Democrats and Republicans is no way to energize or even grow the base. We are more than just fiscally conservative Democrats.

Yes, well, all those libertarians running for office sure are attracting lots of voters with their non-obsessive social issue stances.
