This being my first post as a member of Ricochet, I initially intended to produce a profound piece centered on classical political philosophy and its impact on the prosaic political events of the day.

Instead, I would like to discuss the recent hospitalization of my new wife.

Two days after returning from our honeymoon in late September, doctors discovered a massive blood clot running from her knee to about the level of her stomach. Once treating her condition with blood thinners proved insufficient, surgery became necessary to restore blood flow from her leg. The week after surgery, the blood clot returned in full force, which required further surgical attention.

She has been diagnosed with a chronic clotting disorder stemming from a genetic mutation that most people do not discover before pregnancy (a main symptom of the mutation being miscarriages). Thankfully, even as fresh college graduates, we both have full-time jobs with excellent health benefits, which will allow us to meet the financial obligations associated with her treatment without undue financial strain. I wonder, though, will Obamacare preclude the swift and effective treatment she received for future young people facing similar circumstances?

Our situation would be much different had we elected to join the Occupy Wall Street movement rather than taking jobs paying lower wages than we preferred as we save for graduate school. Obamacare and its pursuant regulations are on track to remove the incentive for others to make similar choices thereby facilitating the entitlement-mentality that brings our “peers” to trash areas of major cities across the country. Drumming under a tarp in the streets of Dallas, we would have been less prepared to face this crisis and probably have fared far worse. Hopefully, a conservative administration in 2013 will begin the process of restoring self-reliance across America- a crucial part of which will be the repeal of Obamacare.

Jace, welcome aboard, and thank you for putting a real face to the impact Obamacare is destined to have on us all.  My prayers for you and your wife, and my thanks for being a part of the productive sector, as opposed to drumming under the tarp.

A truly compelling story.  With a new generation of leaders like you and your wife, there's real hope that America can return to the free and can do country of my youth.

First of all, Jace, my prayers go up for you and, especially, your wife. Second, I wish I had the wisdom you currently possess when I was your age. Most of my wisdom came from being a fool first.

Jace, we have something in common.

Four years ago, my wife and I visited the vacation destination where we had become engaged years before.  My wife broke her leg there, we returned home, and weeks later she suffered a sudden, life threatening pulmonary embolism.  We then found out she has a genetic clotting disorder.

She has not had any recurrence of clotting problems, and I hope your wife has a similar happy result.  All the best to you, and welcome to Ricochet.

Jace - as a new member myself, I appreciate your decision to "write what you know" - grand advice, and offer my prayers for your young family. Godspeed!

Welcome Jace.  Best wishes to your wife for a speedy recovery and no further recurrences.

Businesses famously aim to maximize profit, and critics of capitalism never fail to point out real and imagined problems arising from this incentive, especially in healthcare.  But government officials aim to maximize votes.  Therefore, if they run the health care system it will be tailored towards the needs of the worried well--most voters at any given time--and certainly not to those, young or old, with obscure but expensive conditions.

I'd rather be a profit center than a cost for my doctor.

I add my welcome to Team Ricochet, Jace.  May your future posts include a report on your wife's full recovery.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you both.

Let me pile on redundantly and echo the welcomes prior to this one.

You are now the proud owner of a family. Congratulations ! It brings some pitfalls ,as you well know now, but the upside is immensely greater and the rewards impossible to number. The future just started, warts and all. It will be the greatest journey . Take good care of your wife, as you said - you're the right one for that job.

Welcome, Jace. I'm glad to hear your wife is getting the care she needs and send best wishes for her speedy recovery.

Yes, I'd like to echo the sentiments already expressed as well. What a great maiden post, and on the main feed at that.

You were very wise to write about the personal experiences that are near and dear to your heart because that tends to resonate with people. Laying your life bare for us like that takes a lot of bravery and it's surprising to find out how many others know what you're going through from experience.

I look forward to your future posts.

Welcome Jace!

I hope your wife gets better soon.

Obamacare can't be counted on.  You can't trust the government.  I have TRICARE for Life, not an entitlement but differed salary, earned and paid up, yet Sen. Cain wants to forbid retires from using TRICARE Prime, the best option, and make TRICARE for Life recipients pay $200 per year enrollement.

This is reminiscent of Pres. Bush's effort to force veterans to pay $260 a year to use the VA hospital, ostensibly to keep rich people from using the VA.

You are lucky to have jobs and private insurance.  Pray you stay so lucky.  And remember, no matter what you do for retirement, the government can always take it from you.

Very best wishes for your wife Jace.  I have been through the leg bypass thing, and it isn't pleasant.  But, for what it's worth, it is something you can get through.

What wise decisions you both have made at such a young age, to become employed as you prepare for graduate school.  I shudder to remember what a goof I was in dawdling in sub-employment (part-time) before finishing my graduate thesis after beginning our marriage.  But bound in the frightening drama of your wife's illness comes the remarkable gift of sharing this experience together--you can't imagine the strength that this will bring to your life together.  Best wishes to your new union and much prayer for your wife's healing and delivery.

Welcome! I am glad we get the pleasure of your company rather than the under-the-tarp drummers. Prayers for your wife that she makes a full recovery. Thanks for bringing us your story.
