Over the next couple of days, we'll introduce two new tabs:

  1. Member Feed - This is a private area where members can start their own conversations with contributors and other members. The best conversations that emerge will get moved to the front page, which we're renaming the Main Feed. This is part of a string of initiatives we're working on to enrich the experience of our visitors and members; make the site easier to use; and, ultimately, pack a polite-but-wickedly-well-reasoned political punch.
  2. Inside Ricochet - This is an area that consolidates a few existing features -- links to FAQs, podcasts, contributors, etc. -- and adds some conversations about the direction of Ricochet itself, along with a list of feature enhancements that we're working on. Sort of like a super-duper "About" page.

So stay tuned! We'll announce the changes when they arrive.

Oh, neat. Always felt a little strange making a top-post to the FB Wall, like hogging the mike. So limited to once a month.

Great idea. Looking forward to it. The Headlines tab is a nice addition also.

I really like the idea of a member fee. It adds added value to my subscription and allows me to say more than 200 words.

As kids in the early 2000s would say, "w007!"

I am confused by your reference to "....more than 200 words." Is there some development I haven't heard?

Who in the world likes paying fees?

In the new Member Feed, members will not be limited to 200 word posts. You'll have the tools and the freedom to create posts of any length as though you were a Ricochet contributor.

Another nice feature would one by which we could invite other Members to a private conversation, where two or more individuals might expand on a thought or comment without jacking a thread. That would also be useful for exchanging email addresses or other contact information with privacy.

Cool. But I really like the 200 word limit for comments. It forces us to communicate concisely.

Question: are Member "contributions" under this new scheme going to be screened and edited before they go up? Lord, I hope so.

Sounds great. That you guys are adding functionality at such a rapid clip (and it's all working, far as I've seen) is extra impressive to me considering the trivial PHP application updates I spent too much of my afternoon banging my head against at work!

The new features sound great, thanks.  And I second Kenneth's idea of allowing members to privately swap personal data they are too wise to swap in open forum. The 200 word limit has, I think, been an important factor in keeping some of us disciplined and on point.  I know that many of my messages are precisely 200 words and the cut down phase was not always easy, but may well have saved the membership some tedium.  It works from a readability point of view. On some days I get caught up in reading every response in every thread, but on the plus side I think many of these members will make excellent use of the elbow room.

Cheers!

I'd like to recommend a "book club" tab. And each week's Podcast Encounter book can be discussed. I had a couple questions on the Broadside piece on 2011 taxes and i'd be interested in hearing what other ppl made of it.

Can I get a hallllaaar?

On its way. Soon. Well, pretty soon. Anyway, it's in the stack, as developers say about things that they haven't figured out yet.

Great stuff! Kenneth, we can fight it all out, friendly-like, of course. Maybe even use emoticons.

I agree with Kenneth that it would be valuable to be able to have exchanges amongst a small cadre of people particularly if you're trying to hack through a conceptual issue without boring the other members to tears. Most forums I've been a part of have some type of private messaging feature that allows users to communicate privately but doesn't require anyone to divulge private email addresses, embarrassing tattoos or public appearances with Don Rickles.

Maybe even use emoticons.

I can pretty confidently assert that none of the Founding Fathers used emoticons.

I'd also like to suggest a guest contribution by Joe the Plumber to Peter Robinson's thread before the water closet in his toilet floods his entire residence.

Are you referring to the Michele Bachmann post?
