Colorado State Patrol Executes 3am Wake Up Call
The Colorado State Patrol donned riot gear and marched into Civic Center Park in Denver early this morning, rousted the protesters out of bed, dismantled their tents, ousted them from the park and surrounded the area in time for morning rush hour. This from the Denver Post:
Cpt. Jeff Goodwin of the Colorado State Patrol said troopers arrested 21 people for suspicion of unlawful conduct on public land. He said that number could increase later today.
The state patrol continued to surround the park this morning and planned to clean and secure the park throughout the day. Goodwin said troopers planned to have a long-term presence at the park.
Is this the proper response, or should the authorities ignore the camps and hope everyone goes home when it gets cold? The CSP seems to be showing up the NYPD so far. Governer Hickenlooper and Mayor Hancock, both Democrats, have taken a law and order stance which I think will pay off politically. I am suprised more cities haven't taken action yet. Could this be the beginning of the end?

At what point does the right to peaceably assemble get violated? I can't imagine the founders envisioned occupation of public areas as the same as peaceable assembly.

"The whole world is watching," chanted some protesters.
Yes the whole world is watching. Watching you act like children, like spoiled brats demanding mommy buy them ice cream. This is NOT 1968. Get a job.

They did. They also usually need a permit...and they could get them on littering, etc, if they wanted. I think they had plenty of time to be heard. To me, this is like clearing the Wisconsin capitol after weeks of trashing the place. Who paid for the millions of dollars of damage to the Madison buildings? Same folks that will pay for the park clean-ups...taxpayers.
...which most of them are NOT.

The Tampa Bay PD have been politely warning our local wing of the protest for a few days. This morning, they started kicking out protesters from the public parks, forcing them to take down tents and remove tables and such.
The final "kick them out completely" push is expected later today. Maybe the nation in general has had enough of these guys.

As a Central Denver resident, I was hoping he would do this but did not believe it would happen. Gov. Hickenlooper just won his reelection. He also just won a Fortune 150 headquarters move to Denver. Can it be we have a law & order, pro business Democrat governor? That's as good as gold here. Mayor Michael Hancock of Denver is very pro business. That's why I voted for him. And the Broncos just made Tim Tebow the starting quarterback. Life is good here in the Mile High city.

What is with this evicting people from parks. The real way to teach the OWS people a lesson is to trap them in the parks, and not let them leave when it gets cold and uncomfortable. Make them really earn their protesting chops. If they truly care they won't mind the frost bite.

Re: Colorado State Patrol Executes 3am Wake Up Call
You should only give Hickenlooper credit for taking libertarian talk-show host Mike Rosen's advice. Apparently Hickenlooper was interviewed on Rosen's show a couple days ago and when Rosen asked him what he was prepared to do, Hickenlooper said "I'm not sure what we can do." To which Rosen responded, "How about start by taking down the tents." He pointed out it would be a lot easier to take down 20 or 30 tents than 120 tents. He also expressed concern for the upcoming Veterans Day celebrations scheduled at the veterans' memorial in the park, etc. Apparently Hickenlooper saw the wisdom of his advice.

What better absurdist foil is this protest?! Please, let them do their thing, totally! Indeed, egg them on. More, more,...

Re: Colorado State Patrol Executes 3am Wake Up Call
Friends,
Remember--the Occupy Wall Street protesters are NOT in a public park. They are in what is technically know as "privately-owned public space." The park is owned by Brookfield Properties, and is on the same parcel of land as the adjacent office building.
You do not have a constitutional right to peaceably assemble on somebody else's property--especially if they do not want you there. Brookfield has agreements with the City of New York--Brookfield hasn't been able to clean it in four weeks, and it's beyond a slum.
Time for 'em to pack up and go home. Congrats to the Colorado State Police for having the tactical smarts to make it work.
Doing it in New York, where the broadcast networks maintain at-the-ready camera crews around the clock would be a different matter. Try to move in on Wall Street at 3 am and you'll have live feeds on all three broadcast networks by 3:30 am.

The whole world is not watching, I've asked a few people here in New Zealand their thoughts and for the most part they said "Who?"
