On a related note, Gallup reports that trust in the legislative branch has fallen to a record low of 36%--that's down almost ten percent from one year ago.

A record-low 36% of Americans have a great deal or fair amount of trust and confidence in the legislative branch of government, down sharply from the prior record low of 45% set last year. Trust in the judicial branch and trust in the executive branch also suffered sharp declines this year but remain higher than trust in the legislative branch.

Meanwhile, Vice President Joe Biden, whom reality can escape sometimes, is going around saying:

I guarantee you we’re going to have a majority in the House and a majority in the Senate. I absolutely believe that...On November 3 . . . there will be in Washington, D.C., a Democratic majority in the House and a Democratic majority in the Senate

I'm still waiting for the last guarantee from Biden

"And here's the point I want to make. Mark my words. Mark my words. It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking. We're about to elect a brilliant 47-year old senator president of the United States of America. Remember I said it standing here if you don't remember anything else I said. Watch, we're gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy. And he's gonna have to make some really tough - I don't know what the decision's gonna be, but I promise you it will occur. As a student of history and having served with seven presidents, I guarantee you it's gonna happen. I can give you at least four or five scenarios from where it might originate."

Mollie Hemingway

I would have been surprised if Congress had asked Colbert to testify during a period of high approval ratings and low voter discontent. It's almost like the leadership has an electoral death wish.

I love watching Colbert but I find this "testimony" prank awful. And I blame the members who invited him.

The modus operandi for Biden and other democrats seems to be when lying be more emphatic and make bolder claims.

If you really want to see Biden in full bluster mode check this out. Not merely plagiarism but outright verifiable lies about his resume with a heavy dose of arrogance.

Of course, the media have been all over him for that one.

Forgive the tangent, but it seems that Biden and Obama have given us more than enough material for one of those gaffe bottle openers. A lefty friend gave me a Bush version -- it plays a random Bush audio clip pulled from a set of about six or so -- and I've been waiting for the Obama version ever since. We've got a lot of material: he's been to 58 states, he sees dead soldiers in the audience, he doesn't speak Austrian, he seems to think Hawaii was hit with a big earthquake, etc.

Seems like a failure of the free enterprise system. Maybe the novelty bottle opener industry has been receiving federal bailouts, and they're reluctant to bite the hand that feeds them?

Ottoman and Franco -- I think you will both really enjoy this article, from the archive of The Weekly Standard, on Joe Biden. It includes some of the funniest, and just bizarre, Bidenisms I have yet to see. The article is about Biden's pseudo-intellectualism.

To whet your appetite, here is Biden responding to a voter who innocently asked where he went to school:

I think I probably have a much higher IQ than you do, I suspect. I went to law school on a full academic scholarship--the only one in my class to have a full academic scholarship. .  .  . I won the international moot court competition. I was the outstanding student in the political science department at the end of my year. I graduated with three degrees from undergraduate school, and 165 credits--only needed 123--and I'd be delighted to sit down and compare my IQ to yours.

Anddd, to make it even better--there is not one iota of truth in Biden's statement (why is he such a liar, Franco? Great website, by the way!).

Well, the verdict is in. We are vindicated and chastened. First, we find out how desperate the democrats must be to lose all concept of reality and think that Colbert would be appropriate ( they didnt read the script), and secondly, we are shocked to see that there is something that embarasses democrats.

Rep Conyers asked Colbert to leave the chambers. Was he expecting some snide comment about his wife ? Didn't he get the allusion the tea partiers with the cornpacker comment ?

Don't even want to venture a guess as to what Iowahawk is going to do with this !

Technically, he is right. Even if every race goes to the Republicans, they will not be seated until next year. On November 3 the Congress will look pretty much the way it does now.

But I don't think that is what he meant.

It depends on what you mean by mean.

Indeed, flownover, it did not go well. As documented here by Byron York: http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/blogs/beltway-confidential/Colbert-embarrasses-Dems-Conyers-asks-comedian-to-leave-then-withdraws-request-103712949.html

Though more people watch Colbert's show than CSPAN, so it may come off better when edited. Still, it was a pointless exercise, and we're all for Congress getting distracted by pointless exercises. Prevents them from legislating.

Having Colbert appear before Congress is not unlike network TV's strategy of running a pilot for a new sitcom sandwiched between two popular shows during prime time on Thursday night. The strength of the popular shows adds a bit of oomph to the untested just as the popular visage of Colbert may shore up the well deserved pitiful image of Congress.
