If he were still alive, John Wooden would have celebrated his 101st birthday today.  Below are two great video tributes to him.

A couple of years back, when the University of Nevada had a Sweet 16 team for a couple years straight, my wife and I attended the Wooden Classic tournament.  Wooden was at the event, and the love for the man and his contribution to college athletics was an amazing thing to experience.  It was one of the moments that made Los Angeles feel like a home, rather than an intimidating megalopolis.

I was lucky to have a couple of coaches who had that same mentality. Don't worry about the score - play the game right, to the best of your ability. Let the outcome take care of itself. Take pride in your play, not the scoreboard.

Wooden was the epitome of all that. Virtue wins. He was a man worthy of great praise.

And let's not forget to appreciate the players who came to UCLA, who responded to that message because they believed in it too. They should be commended as well.
