An illuminating editorial on Planned Parenthood from the New York Sun, which points out that the issue here is not abortion rights but taxpayer funding. And the culture that Mr. Schumer's mindset has helped create:

“Never, Never, Never” is the cry Senator Schumer uttered in respect of whether the Senate would pass the funding restrictions on Planned Parenthood wanted by the House of Representatives. Amidst the showdown on the budget he was speaking on the Washington Mall. The question was whether the funding cut would pass the Senate. A video of the senator’s declamation has gone somewhat viral on the Web. Not so, alas, the press conference held in January by the religious leaders in Mr. Schumer’s hometown. The Jewish, Catholic and Protestant clergymen and some lay persons as well were disclosing the fact that in New York City in 2009 a staggering 41% of all pregnancies except those that ended in miscarriage ended in abortion.

That is Mr. Schumer’s hometown, the abortion capital of America....

More broadly the issue is about our priorities as a nation. Even if one accepts the idea that abortion is a woman’s right, a point on which many fine people differ, what is the best broad direction of public policy? It looks like Mr. Schumer has won this round and the Democrats will be able to force Americans who are appalled at the harvest of abortion to fund what Planned Parenthood is doing, at least for this budget. But “never, never, never” is not an uplifting campaign slogan. Eventually, we believe, a far more ennobling vision will assert itself — one in which public policy is designed to foster the growth of our families and to embolden even those in the poorest and most discouraged of our communities to reach for the fulfillment of family in the fullest meaning of the word.

I'm so glad this is finally being exposed to the world. The Declaration of Independence according to Chuck Schumer reads, "All women are endowed by their federal government with certain inalienable rights... abortion, medical care (including dental, psychological, and wellness), education through college, good jobs, childcare, healthy organic food, clean housing and good neighborhoods, transportation (including bullet trains, buses, cabs, and jitneys), self esteem, and vacations... Of all politicians in America, including Pelosi, Obama, etc, upChuck Schumer is the  most despicable.  His position and rhetoric on abortion is just one example of the vomit he hurls at us.   God save us from his bile.

Of all Planned Parenthood activities, if you deduct those that relate to abortion, does the remainder's cost exceed the public funds that PP receives? In other words, when politicians claim that public funding for PP goes to things other than abortion, does PP even do enough things besides abortion to soak up all that public funding? (And yes, I know that money is fungible.)

It's a scam.

We start with the argument that if you need to pay for five things, and the government gives you money for one thing, all it means is that you can shift your remaining funds to pay for the rest.

  • In the case of Planned Parenthood, the liberals argue that government funds don't pay for abortion, but the mere fact that there's extra money means that PP can shift funds from other uses to then pay for the abortions. It's accounting, nothing more.
  • What infuriates me, though, is that liberals use the same argument against giving any money at all to parochial schools. They argue that any money directed to Catholic schools, even if expressly not used for religious education, amounts to supporting a religion.

The double standard is infuriating. Why does the government believe that Planned Parenthood can segregate funds for specific purposes, but that Catholic schools can't?
