Make of this what you will, from Jonathan Alter's Twitter feed:

I certainly hope Christie jumps in.  The race seems wide open.  On the other hand, I'd have to ask the governor of New Jersey this question:  Now a focus group?  Focus groups are what you convene to refine and hone your message.  If there's one politician in America who seems, well, way past focus groups, it's Chris Christie.

Does this mean Alex Trebeck will also jump in? Pat Sajak's long absence from Ricochet can only mean one thing: he's preparing for a run.

If Ryan and Christie do turn out to be running I believe we all here at Ricochet owe the president an apology for mocking his "run of bad luck" excuse.

That would be like Ensign Jack Lemon pounding on Captain James Cagney's door in the classic "Mister Roberts" except it would be " what's all this crud about no spending cuts anymore"!

Trebek is a Canuck - with a birth certificate to prove it!

This is starting to smell like a plot to slow Perry's momentum. "Don't go with Perry just yet. There may be someone you'll like even more..."

I was thinking the same thing earlier.  My knee-jerk reaction is to say 'the more the merrier.'  I am now wondering if we are becoming a tad too diffuse.

Diane Ellis, Ed.

Apologies to Crow's Nest and Etoiledunord.  Each of you had a comment that got swallowed up into the ether as a result of a technical mistake I made trying to consolidate the two Christie posts!

Christie would need a solidly conservative congress to keep him in check on certain issues like the 2nd amendment.

Apologies, apparently it triple-posted.

Apologies, my system glitched and double-posted.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Jonathan Alter has no Republican sources.  None.  He has as many sources in the GOP as I have sources among Victoria's Secret models.

Besides, Jennifer Rubin just cited some of her sources from the Christie camp (who I believe actually exist) who said that Alter's story was false.

It's the back-up quarterback phenomenon.  Every fan loves the back-up quarterback until he actually takes a snap.

If you're a Romney supporter or you think Palin has a shot of winning the three-way contest, "the more the merrier."

If you think Perry is a better choice than Romney, then you say "we're all filled up here...we're fine...no more for us, thanks."

Bachmann could elbow her way into a VP slot but that's about it.

You know, if I were going to try to drown out the very loud splash of a recently announced Republican frontrunner, I'd start rumors of a whole bunch of dream candidates, you know, just to keep the guy from gaining any traction.

Just a thought.

*Apologies to etoiledunord, I hadn't read all the comments before I wrote. Great minds, and all that.

Wow, Pawlenty dropping out was more significant than I had originally thought.

Apparently, Rick Perry has some enemies.

So apparently Ryan and Christie both told themselves they wouldn't run unless Obama's favorables dropped below 40%.

Diane: I knew you were up to something. Pseudo tried to blame Warren Buffet for redistributing some of my posts, but I knew it was you all along. Can't fool me.

Diane:Even still, I'll chalk it up to some Providential divine intervention (Act of God, randomly destroying posts, if you will) that the post was deleted--it came before its time--and will be content to humbly observe the interesting course events may take.

Alter's twitter feed was just updated.

Another source, close to Christie and v-reliable, says there are no Christie focus groups and nothing has changed. I trust him.
