This just in, from Politico:
POLITICO Breaking News
-------------------------------------------------
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, the man who much of the Republican establishment and donor class had hoped would run for president, is backing Mitt Romney for president, a Romney official confirms to POLITICO.
The endorsement is expected at a 3 p.m. press conference.
That didn't take long. Fast work from Mitt World. But I wonder: do these things matter?

Re: Christie Endorses Mitt
I hope this takes the bloom off our previous pining for Christie to enter the race. For all those (like me) who are looking for an anyone-but-Romney candidate, Christie would have been very similarly moderate to liberal. We have to accept that the current field is as much choice as we're going to have, and we're going to have to fall in love with one of them. One of my friends summarizes the mood as L2LR: learn to love Romney.
Re: Christie Endorses Mitt
This endorsement might matter. Christie, ahem, carries some weight.

When did Mr Bean get his doctorate?
I agree, which is why I think this will not help Mr Romney.

Re: Christie Endorses Mitt
It confirms my opinion of Christie. Of course, this can hardly be said to matter.
More consequently, it's another knee in the solar-plexus of those trying to take the GOP in a conservative direction. Politics is rigged, the go-along-get-along Georgetown wing will always win, why bother voting let alone volunteering. The world is doomed and all we can do is fall back on a defended perimeter around Hillsdale College...

They're made for each other. This is proof positive that Ann Coulter doesn't know squat about Christie!

Re: Christie Endorses Mitt
Not to me. I rather expected Christie to endorse an East Coast Republican of his own political persuasion. Chrisite holds no fondness for the 2nd amendmant and couldn't be bothered to join the 27 States suing against Obamacare. Ann Coulter apparently loves this man and now her roving eye seems to have settled on Romney. Go figure...I do not understand it. This guy is as good as we could get in New Jersey, not the entire country. Romney is the same.

It'll matter, but not in a good way.

Re: Christie Endorses Mitt
It matters for Christie's 2016 Presidential run.
Or his 2020 run, if you're still feeling optimistic about next year.

Re: Christie Endorses Mitt
I can't see me learning to love Romney. But I can see coming to believe that he's the best we can do this cycle. Endorsements allay some of my deep worries. Only some.
Choosing Herman Cain or another Tea Party conservative for VP would allay more.
In any case, we have got to take the Senate and keep the House and keep growing the movement until one of our own is ripe for the top job.
Though, if Obama wins four more years, it will be too late.

Re: Christie Endorses Mitt
Chris Christie's great strength was never in his adherence to a consistent, politically-conservative platform.
His strength was wrapped entirely in his willingness to take on the public unions and to make the case for fiscal austerity in a strong, forceful way that could win over independents and moderates. He is a great voice for fiscal sanity and he has moral clarity and knows how to project it to his audience. That's a rare and impressive talent.
None of those strengths translate to value when it comes to endorsing someone else. An endorsement should mean, "This is a person who shares my values, and who I believe would be the best candidate." I'm not sure that Christie's opinion on those matters is any more valuable than any other politician's.
That said, Christie's personal popularity among conservatives will probably translate into a decent bump for Romney.
I always believed that if Christie got in the race, he'd suffer the Perry fate - once the rank and file looked carefully at his beliefs on all issues, they'd discover that he's a moderate-to-liberal Republican, and his cachet would diminish rapidly.

Re: Christie Endorses Mitt
This endorsement matters because Christie is liked and respected amongst people who don't know Mitt Romney well. It's not there yet, but this helps form an electoral axis of MI-OH-PA-NJ.
What Romney lacks is the verve for which Christie is loved.
What's very impressive is Romney's ability to play chess--or is it jujitsu. This morning's story about a supposed Romneycare Obamacare nexus via "advisors." Looked like it was going to help Perry tonight. A few hours later, this endorsement is unveiled, and that story is squashed (at least for today).
As I've said many times before, Romney is just several levels smarter than anyone else running, and possibly, anyone else who has ever run for President. He makes everyone else amateur hour.

Was the price of that endorsement the Atty General's office?

Re: Christie Endorses Mitt
It definitely matters to Peter; maybe not to a lot of others ;-).
Peter will never forgive Romney for disavowing RR during the Kennedy Senate race. I bet RR would, though, just as we all forgave him for the California tax hikes and abortion bill. Atheists in foxholes, etc.

Re: Christie Endorses Mitt
You know that Ann has had a first choice: Christie, second choice: Mitt position for years, right? How does Christie agreeing with her show that her endorsement of him was ignorant?

Re: Christie Endorses Mitt
This Administration would love to run against Romney. They will hammer him relentlessly about his work on Wall St. – never mind his actual job there. Which begs the question: was this OWS show orchestrated in part in anticipation of this very thing, given that the republican powers that be are intent on having Romney win? If so, why are the republican power brokers playing into the Administration’s hands, adding Christie to their ‘strategy?’
And why would we like it if Cain were Romney’s choice for VP – in the hopes that Cain would be there to keep him on the straight and narrow? Why not opt for the real thing?

Reagan expressed great regret for the abortion bill. Romney is proud of Romneycare.

Romney may well be smarter than anyone else running this year. What makes you think that he is smarter than "anyone else who has ever run for President?"
That is quite a claim. Smarter than George Washington? John Adams? Thomas Jefferson? James Madison? John Quincy Adams? Andrew Jackson? Abraham Lincoln? The list is long.
ParisParamus, you owe us a post justifying this claim.

I'm quoting genferei, not to endorse this view of US politics (I think it's exaggerated), but simply to say I think the idea of building and defending a perimeter around Hillsdale College sounds like an incredible amount of zany, exhilarating fun. Let's do it, people! Trenches! Barricades! Shovel-ready!!!
