Oh boy. The Speaker of the House looked bad enough last night after caving on raising taxes without tackling spending.

Today he has a problem that makes last night's problem look like a picnic, and the problem's name is Chris Christie.

According to Christie, it was Boehner and Boehner alone who stopped the Hurricane Sandy relief package from getting to a vote (more than 2 months after the storm).

I know Boehner has taken to cursing, but I suggest he not try that with Christie today.

Also for Peter Robinson: Apropos of your earlier post, Christie tips his hat to Eric Cantor.

Enjoy:

Peter King has been told that the vote will come Jan. 15.  Boehner wants to strip the pork out (put in while focus was on fiscal cliff).

I'm beginning to have serious doubts about Christie's bona fides.  Looks like he's in re-election mode now;  he's the press' new John McCain.  Conservatives beware...

This is silly.  Taxes were increasing WITHOUT A VOTE.  Republicans were incapable of stopping it.  They managed to limit the damage, and disarm Obama for the debt ceiling debate.  And we are killing them for it.

We are tactically inept on this side of the aisle.

Christie should just phone up his buddy in the White House. He'll take care of it for him.

Boehner had better show he still has some bxxxs by stripping out the pork, or he should face an insurrection from the Republican membership.  (He probably should anyway because of his support for HR8.)  From everything I've heard, that bill is loaded with unrelated pork.

After all his hugging of Barack Obama in the middle of a campaign, I have a hard time taking Christie seriously when he whines about his federal aid package, then pretends to be a "conservative".

I wonder why Chris Christie isn't mad at all the legislators who inserted irrelevant pork into the bill. It's weird, though no doubt it's perfectly acted outrage theater.

I'm just not the best audience for outrage theater.

I should add, I agree that Boehner blew it, but just not for the reasons that the media have decided. I'm so so so tired of all this game playing.

Two words: Cory Booker. Next time Christie appears he needs to wear a mask and call himself Ray Mysterio.

You might be right especially if he works out and dines frequently with Michelle Obama.

I'd call it ham acting. For Christie to compare Sandy to Katrina—Congress acted within two weeks because it was the one of the worst natural disasters of the century—is laughable, as if aid packages are all there is to do. You never saw Gov. Blanco call a press conference to vent her spleen (of course, she did lose reelection) Also, remember that in New Orleans we were talking about the poorest of the poor and hundreds of deaths. Along the Jersey shore, not so much. The governor's outrage over the Speaker's so-called selfishness is way over the top, however much ridicule Boehner does in fact deserve for the deal we must all suffer under.

Exactly!  I've said it before, but it is worth repeating.  Hearing Christie bash Republicans because he wasn't able to get his "relief check" in time sure doesn't make me like the man any more than I already did.  I hope republicans are smart enough to never vote Christie anything more than Governor, and dare I even hope that he goes away altogether?  Well, I do.  A moderate democrat would be just as good - wait, that's redundant.

Yeah. Complaining about not getting pork laden special funding out to NJ before stripping the worst excesses is disgusting. Using the occasion to support the Democrats' chief 2014 campaign theme is worse. A Christie win might be better for New Jersey and for Newark, but Booker would be better for the country. I don't think I've felt that way about a competitive race since Liz Dole left NC in 2008.

Someone needs to ask Gov. Christie to explain how all of this is critical to the people of NJ:

•$125 million for the Department of Agriculture’s Emergency Watershed Protection program, which helps restore watersheds damaged by wildfires and drought.

•$20 million for a nationwide Water Resources Priorities Study.

•$15 million for NASA facilities, though NASA itself has called its damage from the hurricane ‘minimal.’

•$50 million in subsidies for tree planting on private properties.

•$336 million for taxpayer-supported AMTRAK without any detailed plan for how the money will be spent.

•$5.3 billion for the Army Corps of Engineers – more than the Corps’ annual budget – with no statement of priorities about how to spend the money.

•$12.9 billion for future disaster mitigation activities and studies, without identifying a single way to pay for it.

Then again, he's made it clear he answers to no one, so that's pointless. One can only imagine his boorishness as he derides the reporter who deign question more wasted tax dollars being poured down the AMTRAK black hole.  I agree with others that Booker seems to be a better choice for New Jersey than Governor Snooki, er, Christie.

I was going to type:

"Chris Christie, trim the fat." and then thought that might be perceived as mean.

Agreed, but was this really the bill to use to take a stand on that by Boehner?   This bill?

What a terrible political miscalculation by him.

It's par for the course with this guy. He's not the worst leader the GOP could have but man is he disappointing.
