Breaking from Paris: former president Jacques Chirac has been found guilty of embezzlement, abuse of power, and political graft. It's the first conviction of a head of state since Pétain, in 1945. He's been sentenced to two years--suspended.

Here's an animated infographic that explains the Chirac trial. It's in French, but that shouldn't impede your understanding of it. (Press "Lancer l'animation" to make the thing start.) The only thing they've left out is a diagram of all the moving cash-stuffed suitcases. Just imagine them whizzing around like planets circling the sun and you'll get the right idea.

 But why the suspended sentence?

A fine maybe?

Seems more of a pat to the bottom than a slap on the wrist.
