The following KFC television advertisement is being used in Hong Kong to promote the chain's new fish fillet sandwich.  The ad also ran in mainland China just before Hu Jintao's visit to the United States last month.

I have to admit that upon seeing the ad, I chuckled.  Then I felt a tinge of offense.  Our president may be flawed man who's trying to advance a destructive socialist agenda, but he's no communist human rights violator.  Putting aside for a moment the fact that the average American hasn't the slightest idea who Hu Jintao is, how would the Chinese like it if Panda Express ran an ad showing Hu being crushed by a giant bowl of chow mein?

On second thought, maybe they'd like it.

So, I guess this means that Obama hasn't quite yet lived up to his pledge to "restore America's standing" with the rest of the world.

We've been had. We're a real paper tiger now.

Given that Panda Express was founded by Andrew and Peggy Cherng -- and that Andrew Cherng was born in Jiangsu, China moving to the US in 1966 at the start of the Cultural Revolution -- Panda Express would be making a perfectly legitimate political critique if they were to make such an add.

Panda Express is one of the great success stories of a Southern California family turning a small business into an empire.  Being from Rosemead, it is also as Chinese as you can get.  Though I recommend Din Tai Fung if you want dumplings.

The crushing would not even be complete before the chorus of "racist" hit a crescendo.

Oh, and worse was done to GWB.

Now, to be fair, "Obama" turns out to be OK at the end of the commercial.  At worst, they show him to be a shallow blowhard. And I can't disagree.

Even the Chinese realize that in a race between Obama and and a fish sandwich, the fish sandwich would crush him.

Maybe something is lost in the translation. It is not for me to criticize Chinese humour.

I once saw a documentary about traditional Chinese comedy (Xiangsheng). It's very different.

Good multiculti response.

Actually, the humor of it doesn't seem all that different from the humor of the video Rob posted of Boehner smashing Pelosi with a gavel.

And KFC China apologizes for the ad.  Darn it, I was hoping for a food ad fight.

On an unrelated note, when I traveled to China I was really shocked to see how many KFCs there were.  Apparently KFC China is kicking McD's Chinese buns.

I don't think China needs to apologize for this commercial, we've punished them enough by sending them our fast food.

I'm still on the "lay off the 'communist' China" stuff.  China is 1) authoritarian; 2) has a bad human rights record, worst where there are perceived threats to the government.

But China is no more "communist" these days than most countries.  Harping on the obsolete Mao/Lenin stuff distracts from the real issues there.  I still see evangelical groups trying to raise funds by talking about Brother Andrew smuggling Bibles into China, which is hilarious- and ignorant.  Anyone there can buy all the Chinese-printed Bibles they want.

That said, I sort of like seeing Mr. Obama figuratively crushed....

Face.  We are not, generally, as concerned about others' opinions of us as are asians.  For an asian to make you the public subject of ridicule is their highest insult.  This is not about humor, it is about face.

I beg to differ.  This looks like the message is that Obama is delivering on his promise of "CHANGE" by summoning the delicious new KFC fish sandwich.  Since he's shown munching on one at the end of the ad, he's clearly no worse for wear from having the thing dropped on him.

The First Lady has stumbled badly: not only has she endorsed barbecue, but she's endorsed inferior barbecue:

In listing Charlotte's many virtues, Obama named southern charm, hospitality, diversity — "And of course, great barbecue."

That was news to residents, who know that North Carolina's best barbecue lies farther afield. "We appreciate the compliments, and they're all spot-on until that last one," the editorial board of the Charlotte Observer newspaper wrote in a blog post titled, "Charlotte = great barbecue? Who knew?"

"Everybody knows to get the best stuff, you gotta drive north to Lexington," the board added.

A local Associated Press reporter quoted a barbecue expert, retired University of North Carolina professor John Shelton Reed, who said that Charlotte for barbecue was "like Minneapolis for gumbo."

The gaffe was enough to make you wonder whether the White House had simply cut and pasted Southern clichés to create the first lady's announcement.

There will be no reciprocal ad - nobody makes fun of their landlord (to their face)

Duane, I know you have actual first hand knowledge of China. I get that you find some anti-China agitprop to be misleading/oversimplified. Fair enough, I'd bet you're right.

But surely it's acceptable to call the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China... a Chinese communist.
