This story has been all over Drudge, but it's worth talking about here. From NBCChicago.com:

A 15-year-old majorette who performed at some of President Barack Obama's recent inauguration festivities has been shot to death in Chicago.

Police say Hadiya Pendleton died after she was shot in the back while hanging out with a group of teens in Vivian Gordon Harsh Park about 2:30 p.m.

Middle of the day. Young girl. Gun violence. Connect the dots:

Police said Pendleton was not a gang member and was most likely not the shooter’s intended target. But most of the teens with her, who also fled the scene, are believed to be gang members, police said.

Chicago has strict gun-control laws. Chicago is run -- and has been run -- by powerful Democrats. Chicago is experiencing a severe crime wave.

Which nobody wants to talk about.

Which is why our side should be talking about it.

Chicago also has lots of something else....um, a certain demographic group that commits virtually all of these crimes.

One needs to also note that Chicago has laws that increase the penalty for committing a crime with a weapon - but it's rarely enforced.

AND it has one of THE lowest clearance rates for homicide in the nation.

AND it's been run by democrats for 50+ years.

“Our side”, brings this type of stuff up all the time, mostly the MSM and the Left ignore it and us when we do.  When they do deign to comment on this type of event, it is only to state that this is just another example on how current gun laws are too lax and too spotty and that ALL guns need to be taken away from ALL people EVERYWHERE.  As long as guns exist, the Left’s response to any gun violence will be that guns should only be in the hands of the government.  No other point of view is acceptable to them.

Of course, it's all the GOP's fault. If they'd just allow the Democrats to ban guns, surely paradise on Earth would follow.

There is another side to this. Under the younger Richard Daley, the police were reined in -- lest they come across the machine's machinations -- and very little effort was put into policing African-American neighborhoods. There has been a very considerable Africa-American emigration out of Chicago back to the South in search of law and order.

Chicago laws don't work because the rest of the country doesn't follow suit!

Here's another subject not to talk about: Detroit moved closer today to municipal bankruptcy.

http://www.cnbc.com/id/100414480

It too is a Democrat Party-ruled city.

It is also 83% black.

Well, Rob, how much time was spent at the NRI Summit attacking Democrats about the civic calamity known as Detroit?

Afraid of being called "racist?"

What's your point?

Are you suggesting blacks are criminal by nature? Don't be coy. Have the guts to . . . um . . . come right out and say what you mean.

The CPD are in a tough position. If they crack down on the gang members who commit these crimes the Jesse Jacksons of the world will accuse them of targeting young black males. If they don't they are called racists who do not care about crime in black neighboorhoods

What law would have stopped this killing?  It can't be gun control Chicago already has that.

I'd say religion, values, compassion and respect for life is the answer, but who'd listen?

At some point conservatives like Rob Long and Mollie Hemingway and Peter Robinson (or their children?) are going to have to sacrifice for the good of the nation and go to work for CBS, NBC, etc. and start playing the "news" thing straight.  If Occupy Wall St. types never hear the truth, they will never understand the extent of our problems.

It's not racist to criticize Detroit- and Chicago-style politics. Chicago and Detroit are thug regimes, and conservatives should not be afraid to point that out. The GOP's national politicians should run against Chicago as much as they run against Washington.

What's surpassing strange nowadays is that, although some  conservatives do fear being called racist, among conservatives there's a larger fear of being accused of calling other conservatives racist.

Unfortunately, some conservatives are racist. It is racist to suggest that the Chicago and Detroit crime is essentially a race problem.

Obviously, crime is a huge problem in black neighborhoods in many cities; however, that problem does not arise from the nature of blacks, but from the sad legacy of slavery, which has been very much exacerbated by a half century of destructive paternalistic leftist politics.

I'm Native American and observe the same sad effects among reservation Indians.

My son went to college in Chicago and he was fond of saying the "Ahhhh, Chicago the city where corruption works..."  perhaps the strict gun control laws were never meant to reduce violence but are just one more tool in the hands of the city officials to carry on business as usual...

Tommy -  Some crimes are 3-4 law crimes;  It's not enough to make murder illegal and guns illegal; there needs to be one or two more laws against it before people following the law.

There is a law threshold.  Throw in limitation on clips and hate crime.  Then you have something.

"Legacy of slavery"?  Nonsense on stilts!!  Or, to put it more bluntly, what a load of horse[ expletive].

Slavery ended in  1865.  The Civil Rights act was 100 years later in 1964.  Inner cities didn't become unsafe hell-holes until 15-20 years after that.  Why did it take 120 years AFTER the end of slavery for its legacy to suddenly rear its ugly head?

Shouldn't we have expected to see that "legacy" manifest itself sometime in, say, the 1800s?

Astonishing,

I think you also have to factor in the people who have been pushing the victim mentality. When people, especially the young, are told that nothing is their fault, they tend to think they can get away with anything.

The story from the NY Times illustrated what we are all saying:  the only way to really eliminate gun violence is to eliminate guns.  Then you will just have the violence.  And the fact is, those who want more gun control are dishonest when they say they don't want to take our guns.

One important aspect of the Chicago machine politics is the full embrace by its politicians of the Democratic-style interest group politics. The rampant violence on the south side and west side does not spill over into the Loop or the more gentrified north side so the outcry is localized. The local news is scandalized when such violence occurs on Michigan Avenue or the Gold Coast.

The un-easy peace that has been formed within the Democratic Party - between Chicago's limousine liberals and "representatives" in poorer neighborhoods (like the former community organizer Barack Obama) - has been to ignore or prevent effective policing in the poor neighborhoods and maximize prosecutions of crime in wealthy neighborhoods. The story the Left in this city tells itself to feel good about this dereliction of responsibility: the problem can be resolved through the school system, e.g., pay the teachers union more, or gun control.

Like any good urban conservative, I condemn this scandal as sacrificing the most vulnerable and disadvantaged for political expedience. The Chicago crime wave can be directly traced back to the logical fallacies of progressive politics.
