I didn't realize how much I missed Dick Cheney's tart humor until I heard his speech at the ground-breaking of the new George W. Bush Presidential Library.

Personally, both very admirable men. I'd be even more impressed if the President had declined the now-typical opening of a library in his honor at taxpayer expense.

Incidentally, the library five minutes down the road from my home in this north Houston suburb was named after his mother, the former First Lady (another admirable person). It stands next to a church, which strikes me as a fitting spot for any library.

Cheney looks like he's lost a lot of weight. That is the thinnest I think I've ever seen him. I wonder if he is well and fit, or is ill.

CE, unfortunately the former veep is not a well man. Cheney suffers from heart failure--a progressive weakening of the heart muscle's pumping ability--the long-term result of multiple heart attacks suffered over the years. Cheney's condition worsened last summer and he underwent implantation of a permanent LVAD (left ventricular assist device), which is a small pump that helps lighten the load.

While I too note Cheney's relatively gaunt appearance, I am delighted that he is recovering well enough to once again speak in public.

"Dick Cheney was the right pick in the year 2000. He was a great Vice President. I'm proud to call him a friend."

Right on, Mr. President. He was the greatest Vice President to have served in my 45 years of adulthood. May God continue to bless him and keep him well for a number of years to come.

This nostalgia for men who oversaw a period of profligate spending and civil liberties erosion is why, despite my enormous distaste for Obama, I have trouble feeling enthusiastic about a return of Republicans to power. It hardly seems to matter whose in charge. Everyone spends insane amounts of money, chips away at our freedom, and is fondly remembered by their partisans.

Spot on Conor. While Obama is in a 9 ft hole due to his spending thanks to "us" he started out in a 3 ft one.
