Cheap Treat
Ricochet has a very, very low protective wall which consists of two very small bricks, but these bricks are sufficient to keep the barbarians at the gate. Yes, I’m talking about our latte sized monthly fee and our code of conduct. Quite frankly, if Ricochet did not require any fee and simply asked for contributions, it would likely raise significantly more money. And as for the code of conduct – the Ricochetoise don’t really need it. Never has there been a more congenial, polite, respectful group. Our two little bricks are not there for us. Without our little wall, I’m sure the left would invade our conversation and attempt a hijacking. Deterred by the cost of a coffee and a promise to be civil. Amazing.

Good pick! That's an inspired version of a tune that's been a favorite since jr. high.

However, I think some hesitancy to contribute to Ricochet is a positive feature. My comments are always heavily revised before posting, and I delete about half of my comments before clicking the button, to avoid saying something stupid (alas, a task destined to fail).
...
Let me try this again...
Yes, my comments are edited, revised, and sometimes mulled over and rejected. It's the lack of an edit feature or back button (delete) which keeps me from participating in member podcasts or meetups. I'm afraid I'd disappoint real-time in-person. I think I'm one of what ~Paules described as a slow and deep student -- hoping I'm not delusional about the deep part.
I hesitate on joining the podcasts and meetups, so far. Because the Ricochetti crowd is so generous, I'm may just chuck the hesitancy.

Re: Cheap Treat
The member fee is a great idea and well worth it. From the very beginning of blogdom I have always snorted at tip jars for many reasons. You may have thought of this but a good way to monetize a site is to become an affiliate. You have many authors who comment, and one thing I love is all of the good reading recommendations from commentors. Becoming an affiliate of Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc. and encouraging members to buy through (or even use your affiliate links in their posts) your site is a win-win situation. Personally I often see a mention of a book that I would like to read/buy, but am usually too hurried to bookmark or notate it (scraps of paper get lost easily, and I never seem to keep up my computer list of 'to be read'- too much like work I guess). But if I could click on the link and buy it, or save it to my wish list...
Re: Cheap Treat
Two points:
1. I can't tell you how cheering it is to read all the comments on this thread. Zowie. Rob and I hoped Ricochet would bring like-minded, enjoyable patriots together, but it was just that, a hope. That it has worked--that it means so much to so many--that Ricochet members are making Ricochet their own--well, as I say, I can hardly tell you how gratifying it is to know that.
2. Aodhan's post (too long for me to quote it full here, but it's comment #20) strikes me as brilliant. He's analyzed the healthy psychology of Ricochet more deeply than had Rob or I. Another example of the way in which really good folks are Ricochet their own. Huzzah!

That was delightful. Thank you. It's a fun song to whistle too, which I'll be doing the rest of the night!

Severely Ltd.
When yer drunk on yer virtue
Face down in the gutter
It's hard to get over the curb
Let alone a brick wall
Even only two tall
Ringing that site superb
If that 'twixt yer ears won't span it
There ain't coffee enough on the planet
