I first saw Cesária Évora sing many years ago, on a summer night at the Hollywood Bowl.  She glided onto stage, barefoot as usual, and sang for two hours, without a break, some of the most beautiful morna songs ever written.  And she sang them from somewhere deep in her barefoot soul.

She was from Cape Verde, sang mostly in Portuguese with a mixture of Cape Verdean creole, but it really didn't matter.  Morna is basically a kind of blues, and everybody understands the blues.

Cesária Évora, singer of fado and morna, whom they called "The Barefoot Diva," and who enthralled an audience on a cool Hollywood night, RIP.

I have two of her albums, which are wonderful and I play them frequently:  Mar Azul and Cafe Atlantico. Highly recommend.

I never heard her - in London we get lazy, because there is so much amazing stuff on all the time. I regret that now. Thanks for the album tips, FX.

She is--was--quite wonderful, and a particular favorite of my husband's. IIRC, she was here a few years ago and we were unable to go for some reason. So sad. I think I might pull one of her CDs from the shelf and read a little Hitchens...

How beautiful.  Human beings never cease to amaze me.
