Care For Some Papa John's This Evening?
I had forgotten that Wonkette existed, it having long since ceased being an interesting web site. But earlier today it ran something written by Jack Stuef so vile, so thoroughly dishonorable, it got in a speck of trouble.
The post, which editor Ken Layne has since vigorously defended, is so crass that it's difficult to characterize (here's a summary). But it calls Sarah Palin's son Trig, who has Down syndrome, "retarded," "somewhat alive," and the product of incest. The comments, which are being scrubbed as the evening wears on, are somehow even worse.
When conservatives who continue to read the ever-popular site saw the post, they asked the advertisers why they were financially supporting such work. To their credit, Papa John's, Huggies and Vanguard immediately stopped their ads.
While Wonkette eagerly took these groups' funds earlier in the day, they responded by calling these advertisers "homophobic" and supporters of "wingnut extremists."
This isn't really a conservative or liberal issue but a decency issue. Wonkette's publishing of this trash, much less its defense of same, is inexcusable.
Something tells me Papa John's might be a bit easier than normal this evening.

I was kind of hoping we would not even dignify this by mentioning it on Ricochet.

Well then let's counter it with something positive: Trig shares his birthday with the esteemed Peter Robinson. He's three, already. Trig, that is.

Re: Care For Some Papa John's This Evening?
My wife has been dealing peripherally with some family strife caused by one relative posting on a blog something that hurt another relative's feelings. What she's tried to explain to the blog poster is that yes, you have a right to post whatever you want about your feelings on the Internet, but you should not then be surprised, hurt or offended when others take exception to what you posted -- because they have feelings too.
This comes to mind because of the offended reaction of the Wonkette publishers (I will take Mollie's word that they used the terms "homophobic" and "wingnut extremists" in their protestations to their erstwhile advertisers). Too many people believe that the First Amendment and our broader societal support of free speech means that they have a right to say whatever they wish to and about whomever they wish without being subject to any repercussions.
Wonkette can publish whatever it wants, within the limits of slander, libel or contravention of law. However, others have the right to dissociate themselves from that speech and to denounce it. That's especially true of commercial enterprises that may find association with offensive speech drives away customers.

Perhaps the link to Wonkette in Mollie's post can be altered to link to some other source that presents or describes the material in detail - so as not to reward Wonkette with incoming links and clicks.

Those who attack Palin's kids are the vilest scum. Moreover, they do so because they lack the intellectual gravitas to honestly criticize her policies and record.
My compliments to Papa John's, Vanguard, and Huggies for their decision.

I'll do that. Thanks, Stuart.

Of course this sort of attack is deranged and disgusting. And of course we're all quite right in denouncing it.
But I can't help but note the irony that yesterday, folks here on Ricochet were deploring GLAAD for it's denunciation of Kobe Bryant's homophobic slur and standing forthrightly against politically-correct "censorship" of his right to make an ass of himself.
Can we please be consistent?

It is tough to characterize. "Vile" and "thoroughly dishonorable" are on the mark, though.
"Vicious" is accurate though insufficient.
Best I've got is an "icky cacophony."

Sure, if somebody wrote something this nasty about, say, Elton John's kid, I'd bet that every single traditional-marriage-only type on Ricochet would deplore it.

I doubt that. Elton John, after all, is just one those, um...people to whom Kobe Bryant referred.

As most here try to maintain a higher ground as it were....
Sometimes you have to get mud on your boots...
These kind of attacks on children need not go unaswered, and should never be. How would it play out if one visited a Liberal household and upon observing the children, announce when addressing the father... State that his sperm was defective or the mother that bore the child was also ?
So go the smears, unforgiveable...

The official cruise line of the National Review cruise. What were they doing on Wonkette in the first place?

Anybody remember what put Wonkette and Ana Marie whatever on the map in the first place? It was a narrative about some girl who was whoring in DC. Consider the source folks, consider the source. Nothin to smell here, move along people.....

I plan to eat Papa John's pizza while wearing only Huggies, and purchasing some fine Vanguard insurance products for the next NR cruise on the Holland America line.
Apologies to Papa John's and Huggies for the inept product placement. But the garlic butter sauce they serve with every order is perfect for crust-dipping, and everyone knows we conservatives reproduce at an alarming rate, so there's a big market there.

I had no idea that Huggies served garlic butter sauce..... and I certainly would not use it for "crust-dipping."

Re: Care For Some Papa John's This Evening?
As a proud father or two autistic children, I merrily join in the disdain shown by advertisers and others toward Wonkette's thoruoghly stupid comments regarding Down's Sydrome children. What is most notable, however, about the Wonkette post is:
* The whiff of eugenics still wafts around their sensibilities: can we please find a way to keep these, well, different children from disrupting our meal at a Thai restaurant? They're so unseemly!
* The blame the parents syndrome: back in the old days, Bruno Bettleheim & Co. blamed bad parenting for disabled children. Now, it's just bad parents (or incestuous parents) who should be blamed for not leaving their special needs newborn in the Alaska wilderness to be eaten by bears.
* The idea that they are funny. You would think that after years of politcal correctness telling us we can't tell jokes about Polish people, women, minorities, poor people, or women in wheelchairs, they might be just a tad sensitive about demonizing innocents whose brain chemistry differs from theirs. But no. At least if your parent is a Republican. Memo to Wonkette: you guys aren't funny, you're not insulting, you're just very, very lame.

Re: Care For Some Papa John's This Evening?
Ricochet is awesome. Only here can I be the foolhardy idealist.
Yeah, but what's with the wedge cut on the square deep dish pie?
C'mon. Wedges are for circular pies, rectangular slices are for rectangular pizzas.

Re: Care For Some Papa John's This Evening?
Why? Did the NBA start hiring 3-year-old referees? There is a difference.
Bennie Adams, 44, has been an NBA referee for 13 years, has a Master’s in mathematics from Southern University and taught the subject there before becoming a professional basketball official. He can take care of himself, which is exactly what everybody here at Ricochet believes in.
He didn't need GLAAD, his union rep or David Stern to come to his defense. What he should have done is T-ed the idiot up again (automatic ejection) and let Phil and teammates handle him.

Re: Care For Some Papa John's This Evening?
Clearly the Wonkette is targeting the Andrew Sullivan audience, with all of the integrity and humanity that that entails. I don't recall ever hearing of these guys before, and if Ricochet did more of it I might agree with the argument that they are best left unnoticed.
And the wonderful thing about free speech is, it makes it easier to spot the fools and monsters. The censor prefers they pass among us unnoticed for what they are, their ideas never exposed and explored in harsh gaze of the public eye. The bad part is that, if a society does not take the duties of citizenship seriously, bad ideas can take hold. FDR's magical money box comes to mind as an historical example.
