Calling all in the Carolinas and Georgia
The Other Diane and I have resolved that the members in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia (well, for our purposes, western North Carolina and the mountains, the South Carolina Upstate, and northeast Georgia) must meet. So, an idea is germinating - a Ricochet soiree here in our blessed region. (Actually, we don't have soirees around here; we have things like meetin's, revivals or hoedowns, so we'll rebrand it appropriately. Don't worry, though - all of these things are like soirees, only more fun.) We are still working on a date - no later than the first week of August - and a place.
So who's in, and when? Atlanteans, Charlotteans, Charlestonians, Rale..., er, people from Raleigh: you're all more than welcome, as is anyone passing through. In the meantime, ponder these potential venues and let us know your preference so we can track the coordinates to identify the best time and place to get the most folks:
- Greenville, SC: Central to the region, smack dab on I-85, and with a fantastic downtown featuring plenty of restaurants and a minor league ballpark built to the exact dimensions of Fenway Park.
- Charlotte: Not an ideal location, but central to the Carolinas and bisected by two interstates (although not great for the Georgians).
- Atlanta: Not my favorite and not central to anything, but not terribly far from anyone (except those west of the NC mountains, meaning most people in NC and SC). On the other hand, I know several members are there.
- Asheville, NC: The "Paris of the South," the "Santa Fe of the East": why? Because it's overrun with hippies and "trust-a-farians", that's why. Nevertheless, it's accessible by two interstates and the vistas are breathtaking.
- And if all else fails, I'm happy to play host in my beloved Spartanburg.
So, what'll it be? Let us know and we'll get something together, even if it's just a small group.
And for the rest of you not so fortunate to be within striking distance, here's a taste of what you miss:

Re: Calling all in the Carolinas and Georgia
Since I am in Marietta, a suburb of Atlanta I am for that area.
Actually, there are nice places around Atlanta to meet.
Greenville is also a cool choice. Maybe we should do a survey monkey.

How about Chateau Elan? (Just kidding.) A survey monkey is a good idea but far beyond my technical capabilities. Can we put you down as the volunteer?

Re: Calling all in the Carolinas and Georgia
I vote we let families come but leave the monkeys at home. Great post, Matt! Now we need to figure how to get this noticed on a very busy day on the member feed...

Re: Calling all in the Carolinas and Georgia
I'm in Blairsville, GA, two hours from everything. I love road trips, though, so y'all are in luck.
Dave was leaning towards some place around an interstate so he could park his truck, which leads me to think I-85 right around the border, or maybe over at Lake Harwell somewhere. Or whatever.

Hmmm...how about Clemson? School's not back in swing for fall yet, there's some places we could stage all the fun (here's a thought), and there are some truck stops near Anderson not far away. Getting Dave back and forth won't be a problem at all.

Re: Calling all in the Carolinas and Georgia
NICE. My family lives in Hartwell, so that works out well for me.

I vote for a weekend gathering in Greenville, but Aug 5-7 is out -- children's camp.

Re: Calling all in the Carolinas and Georgia
I would think Atlanta would be most central. Three hours up the road for me.

Ah, an outlier. Where you at, Matthew?

Re: Calling all in the Carolinas and Georgia
I'm just west of Charlotte-- so Greenville, Spartanburg, even Clemson work for me. If we're voting I would cast mine for Greenville. The West side area around Fluor Field and the Liberty Bridge is full of restaurants/ bars and very nice on a weekend afternoon. Great idea, Matthew & Diane. That's my 2 cents.Hey, we could all go by the hospital in Greenville where Rob Long got emergency room treatment too! OK. Maybe not.
Re: Calling all in the Carolinas and Georgia
The entire region works for me, so name the date and place and I'll discuss it with my travel agent, er, ...I mean my dispatcher. I think this could be mad fun, bordering the edge of legality. Casey, you mentioned something about mason jars?
May '10
Re: Calling all in the Carolinas and Georgia
I don't know, Dave: the last time I saw a Mason Jar here, the good folks from the Sheriff's department were arresting some fellow over what it contained.

Mine are labeled "Alternative Fuel -- Experimental". We're allowed to make that here. :)

Isn't that found on the same aisle as baby formula in the Blairsville Piggly Wiggly?

Re: Calling all in the Carolinas and Georgia
Let's aim for a gathering in Greenville, SC this time so we might pull in some members from eastern NC or SC. How about early evening on Saturday, July 30? Matthew Gilley will look into potential locations and let us know more details soon.
Matthew Lawrence, maybe next time we can plan an event closer to you. Unless you're up for a road trip that weekend??! Would be great to meet you in person.

Re: Calling all in the Carolinas and Georgia
Corn squeezin's is corn squeezin's. However, the guvmint subsidizes some and ostracizes other. So, the pure stuff goes in jars, the weaker stuff goes in cars.Saturday July 30th looks good.

Lawrence, c'mon up here. You can stay in the hammock out by the chicken shed until Saturday.

I wish we had a Piggly Wiggly. Or even just a Piglet.

Re: Calling all in the Carolinas and Georgia
We live in the Denver of the East just west of Charlotte. Many, many progressives in Charlotte. We will travel wherever and whenever.
