California, a State that Has Gone Stark Raving Mad II
Mr. Robinson, The California State Board of Equalization's helpful advice on paper bag surcharges as related to sales tax? Is this truly the best we can do to highlight all the wisdom that The Golden State has to offer the rest of the Union in regards to governance? I'll see your paper bag surchages and raise:
The city of Roseville Municipal Code 9.40.020, "It is unlawful for any renter, leasee or owner of any premises to conduct, permit or allow a public or private dance without the dance permit required by this chapter".
The Station - a railroad themed restaurant at the entrance to the city, has for years featured music and dancing as part of the restaurant's nightly line-up featuring: "Mid Century Classic's" on Senior Saturday evenings, with music and dancing from the 30s, 40s, and 50s along with Swing Time Tuesdays, Country Wednesdays, Salsa Thursdays, as well as Rainbow Latin Sundays.
However since May 5th, without any prior notice or warning, the Roseville Police Department, at the urging of their Planning Department, has dispatched armed officers – for no other reason than to stop people from dancing.
All you non-Golden States, hope you're paying attention.

What are the odds that a board of hippie bureaucrats will be the antagonists?

What are the odds that a group of septugenarians fighting for their weekly shot of Glenn Miller will be the protagonists?

So Footloose II will be set in California, I guess. We Okies will be happy to shed the moniker of the anti-dance state.

Look, I was born there, but honestly... just give it back to Mexico and be done with it. Just make the Mexicans take our liberals too. I don't even know if New York of the 70's had gotten this bad.

I grew up in Roseville, and it's really not so liberal. It's represented in the House by conservative Republican Tom McClintock, and Placer County voted 55% for McCain/Palin.

I think these examples portray a desperation for funds rather than a bunch of loons making up crazy ideas (though I'm sure there are still loons involved). Governments are scrounging for cash. We'll only see more of this as the government coffers dwindle due to the much bigger issue of California's insolvency.

Actually, it sounds like a typical zoning fight. Would you want a nightclub next to your home?
City planners said they have received numerous complaints from neighbors who say their patience is wearing thin with the noise and crowds during late hours.
“One night our fire department went out there to investigate, they found that there were 550 people in a building that only allowed occupancy for 202 people,” said city spokesperson Megan MacPherson.
New regulations state that in order to qualify for a loud music and dancing permit, an establishment must be at least 500 feet from residential zones. The Station is not.

Re: California, a State that Has Gone Stark Raving Mad II
That was one of my inital thoughts as well but provision already exists for dealing with excessive noise, Roseville Municipal Code 9.24.150 Noise disturbances. Is that not being enforced? How does requiring a permit for holding a dance in any way address this? Is local law enforcement somehow incapable of dealing with excessive noise yet despite that they still excel at breaking up illegal dancing? Insanity.

Per Yer report, they're allowed to go "stark mad," but not "stark raving mad."
