California = Insanity

Michael Ramirez's cartoon in today's Investor's Business Daily says it all, doesn't it? If you have time, head over to IBD for a typically excellent editorial detailing some of the reasons why our state remains nuts, absolutely nuts.

Re: California = Insanity
I was just trying to find a conversation where it would have been prudent to add that link... funny.

Re: California = Insanity
I think the people of California need to be told in no uncertain terms that they won't be bailed out by the Federal government. For decades California has spent and governed its vast resources foolishly. They are now broke and turn to JERRY BROWN to restore fiscal sanity.
I don' think Washington's governing classes even have the slightest idea how unpopular a federal bailout of California would be.

Re: California = Insanity
It'd be one thing if California, like the prodigal son, spent itself into oblivion doing things that were transparently stupid and then came crying for support from the rest of us. What's unforgivable is the way California comes with one hand out, and the other wagging a finger at our troglodyte policies.

Is Cali too big to fail?

Re: California = Insanity
I have been curious as to whether or not it reflects the disconnect of the majority of voters in CA or is it a union "group think" type thing

California is so uniformly wrong that the LA Times fired twhe brilliant Michael Remirez from a daily cartoon a few years ago.

Re: California = Insanity
The beauty of federalism is that sensible people can flee a freakin' disaster like California. The downside is that those who remain tend to be concentrated state-leeches and rent-seekers. They will keep this wheel spinning until it begins to fall apart.
I recently gave a talk about the dangers of "entropy" in the context of communications technology - the notion that as we remove the constraints from communication, we get more of it, but it is inversely less meaningful and unproductive. I suspect in California we are seeing political entropy in action. As those who would constrain political decay - by applying personal and institutional discipline - leave, I suspect we will the decay accelerate and turn into chaos.
Hope I am wrong.

Re: California = Insanity
There's no need to tell California that no Federal bailout is forthcoming because it seems that California voters don't think one will be needed. My completely unscientific sampling of Brown voters finds that folks are convinced that Jerry will fix it quick and the whole thing will blow over.
They are convinced that "he knows Sacramento and the process" , which he does of course, and that "he'll know what buttons to push". Apparently the whole crisis results from Arnold's lack of experience, or something like that.
In other words, the people of this state are in a very deep state of denial, which means that even if Brown decides to tackle the problem for real, the people lack the political will to support it.

Re: California = Insanity
That's fine, if Californians think Gov Moonbeam is the answer then I wish them good luck. I just want all of California to know that they won't be bailed out if the Brown administration can't balance the books. I don't think I am alone in this. California has to be responsible for its actions and decisions not the rest of the country that is making hard decisions and balancing their budgets.

Re: California = Insanity
I live in California. When I went to my polling station, a young bearded man with a machete and a young woman wearing a black Che t-shirt and camo pants approached me. The woman aimed an Uzi at my head and asked if I was a Republican. Nervously, I replied that I was a Democrat. They slowly but warily lowered their weapons and let me proceed to the voting booth...okay, maybe that didn't happen but give California a few more years...

Re: California = Insanity
The editorial was chilling,.
From the article:
A large part of the state's Democratic tilt comes from its massive Latino population. The Los Angeles Times noted that it made up 22% of the voting pool, "a record tally that mortally wounded many Republicans."
Indeed, Latinos went for Democrats by 2-to-1 — perhaps ending the naive idea of some in the GOP of a New Majority built on the burgeoning Latino population.
A new majority built on the burgeoning Latino population is coming, and we best wake up and smell the chorizo. 75% of the nation's 12-20 million illegals live outside of California, their children, born here, will vote. Surely Clinton-era 'anchor-babies' (hint: even a 3rd generation, conservative Mexican cringes at that term!) voted for Obama.
My hope is that we find a way to win many over. My fear is what may happen if we don't.
God forbid young Latinos squander their lives on some future liberal political plantation. God help us face the emerging political reality better than the South did in the era preceeding the civil rights movement.
I realize I am being dramatic, but our history is what it is.

Dr. Savage, surrender to that siren call! Bring your enterprise and your talents to my stomping grounds - the I-85 corridor between Atlanta and Raleigh. I think you will find several points on that 5-6 hour drive that are particularly hospitable. Be sure to tell your friends....
