Fareed Zakaria is wondering: "Where in the world is Ahmadinejad?" Well, I was wondering too, but yesterday I was vacuuming behind the sofa, and what do you know.

He's here, in Istanbul. Or he was, yesterday

ISTANBUL — Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday blamed poverty in the world's least developed countries (LDCs) on the "colonial policies" of leading powers and on an unfair international economic system.

"The least developed countries (LDCs) should not be treated as homeless people, they have the capability and resources," he told a UN-backed summit bringing together leaders of 48 LDCs in Istanbul. "It was colonial policies that impeded their development."

No photos this time of Gül and Ahmadinejad embracing (not that I've seen, yet), and I'd say these two are looking distinctly uneasy. As well they might.

Did he propose a more fair economic system? One finally breaking chains of colonialism four score, thereabouts, after the jailers left for home. Or am I being too dismissive of the problem? Mugabe is rather a spot on native personification of Rhodesian authority.

And who, precisely, were the offending colonialists of Ottoman and Persian fame?

Whatever he has in mind, I'll wager it hardly resembles Bay Area progressivism.

Ah the white devil remains a convenient scape-goat after all this time. However Singapore, Honk Kong, Malaysia, Vietnam, (and some parts of Eastern Europe) are all doing well in spite of burdens of colonialism.

I omit Australia here, because tonight was Federal Budget night, and I have yet to work my way through what new disaster our (left) Labor government in coalition with the Greens have given us.

AngloCon - Off theme here, but just read your bio. Good heavens you have moved around a lot, a less charitable inference would be you are avoiding the IRS. (I am joking)

As one writing personal checks to the United States Treasury - my reward for self-employment - I can assure you the IRS knows where I live.

I'm glad you picked on the theme of successful colonial alumni. Singapore is a fine example if you aren't too particular about a level of authoritarianism we would never accept. India makes another interesting study. For decades it was a Soviet block sympathiser, with predictable results. After moving past the colonial greivance stage, India began to flourish. Embrace the inner Angloshpere.

Always the last place you look (congratulations on the vacuuming, though).  Turkey could clearly benefit from the concept of a beer summit.

Claire, it's a pity you missed the opportunity to stop by and ask him about the 12th Imam.

He is known to go and visit him, from time to time, so that is probably where he was.
