souffle

Last night, I had the privilege of attending the Becket Fund's annual dinner where Eric Metaxas received the Canterbury Medal. He's the witty and powerful mind behind Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy. One of the surprises of the evening was a videotaped greeting from President George W. Bush. (Interestingly, Ursula Hennessey had her own fan club at the dinner -- made up of rather boisterous athlete-writer-scholar types.)

In any case, I had President Bush on the mind when I read this account of where he was when he received the call from President Obama about Osama bin Laden:

"I was eating souffle at Rise Restaurant with Laura and two buddies," Bush said when asked what he was doing when he received the call from President Obama, according to an ABC News contributor who attended the event....

Bush said Obama described in detail the secret mission to raid bin Laden's Pakistani compound and the decision he made to put the plan into motion. He told Obama, "Good call."

I don't know why this makes me laugh, but it does. Souffle? Cowboy Presidents eat souffle? This is probably one of the last food items I would have guessed he was eating when he took the call.

The other thing that made me laugh is this, from the Telegraph's Toby Harnden:

Osama bin Laden to al-Qaeda: 'Don't bother assassinating Joe Biden'

I know, I know. Assassinations aren't funny. But as Harnden points out, there's no way Osama wouldn't have wanted to get Cheney.

It's an indication of how successful has been the Liberal/Alinsky narrative.

Agree about Joe Biden, btw - maybe because Mr. Bin Laden thought that President Biden would make the weak horse even weaker than does Mr Obama (actually, I am not sure that is true).

Glad the horse still has some fight in it - as Mr Bin Laden discovered :-)

I love it that the Canterbury Medal gets awarded to one “who has resolutely and publicly refused to render to Caesar that which is God’s," and can understand how Bonhoeffer himself would fit this description, but how did Metaxas earn it?  Except by writing about Bonhoeffer?

Nothing against Metaxas. Just curious.

Good thing it wasn't a philly cheesesteak with Swiss cheese.

Metaxas addressed this in the speech. Very self-deprecating, that one. He surmised that it was a few things. First, he figures that the real awardee died unexpectedly just as they were about to announce. Then he figures that the second real awardee likewise died. They decided to  -- like Gorbachev or Wotyjla -- pick someone they could reasonably be assured would not die before the awards dinner.

That, and writing an unbelievably good book about the Lutheran pastor Bonhoeffer.

The difference between a conservative and a compassionate conservative?

W.F. Buckley came from a Texas family that moved up to New England.  Of course, once there, Chris Buckley came about and we know how that turned out.

G.W. Bush came from a NE family that moved down to Texas, so maybe the next generation will be more reliably conservative.  Oh wait, the daughters are barely batting .500, but, really, they're Bushes, not Texans.  Batting .500 is as good as those get.

I've always like GWB but, reading items like this just make me like him more. A gentleman.

This is in poor taste, I know, but forgive me: maybe Biden was a key part of that SOB bin Ladin's assassination plot; you know, someone left behind who could be reliably counted upon to completely wreck the place after the target was dispatched.
