This video is absolutely fascinating, and I never knew it existed. You can find the transcript here. Buckley was having so much fun with Alinsky.

We're all much poorer now that Buckley's gone, and we'll have to man-up and do the job he did so well.
I think it would have been better if Buckley had just begun by quoting Alinsky's Rules For Radicals, dedicated to Satan "the first radical", and moving forward to give techniques for character assassination, family destruction, and anarchy. Perhaps Buckley did, later on in the interview.

Excellent find!
Proof, I think, that when in doubt, consult the Tablets: see what WFB or Milton Friedman has to say about a subject first.

Rob, he was one of nature's greatest gentlemen. I only met him a few times, but each time, he treated me as though I was the single most interesting person in his universe. Though I was a nobody, Bill Buckley clearly believed that even a nullity such as myself brought value to his life. It wasn't artifice; he was sincere.

For that matter, there's the entire series of Milton Friedman lectures that developed into the Free to Choose series. Bits and pieces of them are available on youtube, but the full 19 hours worth of lectures and Q&A sessions is only available for sale from the Free to Choose Network ...for $300. This would be a killer bit of content to license. Here is just one of the gems from this series, in which a college student gets his mind blown by Milton Friedman in five agonizing minutes.

For me this clip was fascinating for an additional reason: I have never seen Firing Line before, since most of its run was before my time, and when I did start following politics (mid-late 90's), I didn't pick up on the show in time. What a shame to not have such a smart show on nowadays.

The title of it says that the student is "A Young Michael Moore." Is it really? If I really try, focusing on the chin, the down-turned mouth, and the eyes, I think I can see the resemblance. But if you didn't tell me who he was, I would never in a million years guess that he's Michael Moore.

While we're wishing for better access to Firing Line episodes, let me add my wish for downloadable video. Either iTunes or Amazon video would be great (and even greater if they priced episodes a bit more in line with the rest of the content).
I confess that I wonder what the motivation might be for setting a $10 price on a single-episode DVD. Clearly the Hoover folks don't see it as their mission to make sure the Word of Buckley is spread far and wide at that price. But it doesn't really seem likely to maximize revenues from the content either.
After briefly considering the possibility of a liberal mole who wishes to suppress the dangerous ideas, I've just settled on... is "incompetence" too harsh a word? (Would I be banned from the Huffington Post for such a vicious attack?)

In retrospect, Buckley won the battle, but Alinsky won the war. Men are not rational beings, they are rationalizing. Buckley offered us logic, Alinsky offered us the chance to get loaded and get laid. The fact that Alinsky got what he wanted in the form of 90% illegitimacy rates among American blacks and poverty wholly dominated by single mothers is irrelevant. We still want to get loaded and get laid.
