Boehner: Giving Feds More Money Would Be Like Giving An Addict More Cocaine
President Obama's plan to raise tax rates is not sitting well with House Speaker John Boehner. The Cincinnati Enquirer reports on a speech he gave to small business owners at the University of Cincinnati:
"Giving the federal government more money would be like giving a cocaine addict more cocaine,'' the West Chester Republican told about 100 members of the Goering Center for Family and Private Business at UC's Alumni Center.
... while he agrees with the president that every American should pay their "fair share' of taxes, it shouldn't be done through "class warfare."
"The president wants to talk about increased taxes,'' Boehner said. "I want to get new revenue by putting people back to work."
Indeed. Getting the government out of the way of hiring would be a better path to long-term success. But I'm just pleased to see such a powerful simile used by the Speaker. Good work. While I love dry discussion of economic theory, an effective politician knows to use imagery to convey an underlying principle. Let's see more of this.

Hopefully, Boehner has been taking notes from Peter Schiff.

I agree Mollie, I think it is a religious addiction to spending. It's emotional and spiritual. I think its a positive that Boehner brought up the analogy. But there is much to exploit in the atmosphere created by this administration.
Why are the facts of where "revenue" comes from not woven into the discussion from all Republicans? Are they scared to educate the great unwashed masses?
Here it is:
The top 1% of income earners pays 40% of the taxes.
The top 5% of income earners pays 70% of the taxes.
Call out early and often Republicans...
"The top earners are already paying their fair share."

The problem with class warfare, of course, is that the Bush tax cuts made the tax code more progressive, that's why they had such a large effect on the pre-Obama deficit. The only way to raise significant revenue is by making the code less progressive.
Isn't it a little early for Obama to be doing this kind of base-energizing? If I were him I'd do it six or eight months before the election, to keep the energy in the liberal base from peaking too soon. If financial markets (i.e. foreign governments) are forcing the issue, won't he shoot himself in the foot later when he "caves" and does a deal with Republicans?

Present a politician with a problem. Is their solution via government or without government? That's all I need to know.
What We need are some old fashioned brave American explorers Who'd be willing to risk Life and limb to delve deep into the heart of a place called " bureaucracy" and discover the mythical papers of "The Constitution."

Speaker Boehner should be forced to go from cocaine treatment center to cocaine treatment center apologizing to the patients for insulting them.

Spoken like a true progressive. I know were not supposed to take what the GOP says seriously but one should note he is in favor of giving more revenue to the Federal government. Most limited government people want to see the federal government shrunk so that less not more revenue would be consumed by it. I am in favor of more jobs so more capital can be available for the private sector. The Speakers GOP big government tendencies are on display, it is too bad the cheerleader pundits almost never take time to look at them.

You missed it by a mile. We will get more revenue after we get government out of the way and allow business to make money. They will then hire people and we will collect revenue from their income/payroll taxes.
