Bobby Thomson Heads for Home

Couldn't let this go unremarked on Ricochet. Bobby Thomson died yesterday at the age of 86. If you don't know who Bobby Thomson is, watch the video of what is widely considered the most memorable play in the history of baseball. The park was the Polo Grounds, the pitcher was the Brooklyn Dodgers' Ralph Branca. The New York Giants announcer, perhaps as famous for that moment as Thomson himself, was Russ Hodges.
Thomson played in the majors from 1946 to 1960, ending with a .270 batting average, 264 home runs and 1,026 RBI's--and one unforgettable occasion, for which thanks and rest in peace.

Mr. Klavan, I ask the standard trivia question about that hit: who was on deck? Let's see the first Ricocheter to answer.
Re: Bobby Thomson Heads for Home
That would be a young, unknown player by the name of Willie Mays.
