Blogging from Virginia
On Monday I visited the University of Virginia to give a lecture about my book Left Turn. I think UVA might be the most beautiful campus in America.
Upon arriving, I thought I saw some Occupy protestors. But I’d soon learn that they were two young women, Lindsey and Caitlin, distributing pro-life literature. They were both extremely friendly, charming, and smart. I hope they run for office someday.
A professor friend at UVA told me that the campus had no Occupy protests; however, the town of Charlottesville did.
Caitlin’s shirt displayed a quote from Thomas Jefferson, the founder of UVA: “The care of human life and happiness and not their destruction is the first and only legitimate object of good government.” Seems pretty wise to me.

Re: Blogging from Virginia
My campus is so dominated by liberals, the student newspaper referred to "anti-choice movements across the country". However, I was happy to see a half-dozen students with pro-life posters and flyers last month. Academia isn't a monoculture yet.

"I think UVA might be the most beautiful campus in America." It may be east of the Rockies. Truly the most beautiful campus is Oregon State University's, Especially during springtime when the rhododendrons are in bloom.

I love those women! Way to speak truth to power! They and their ilk are the true non-conformists in a land of slavish progressive politics.

Note that they don't call it a "campus" at UVA. They call it "the grounds". They take the Jefferson thing pretty seriously there.
