Today the Capitol was the site of a demonstration and counter-demonstration regarding traditional marriage laws. I live so close to the Capitol that I try to cover most protests there but was unable to make it down today. But many the folks I follow on Twitter reported that their favorite sign was "Jesus had two dads and he turned out okay."

Isn't blasphemy so cute and hilarious? It's worth noting, of course, that liturgical Christians today commemorate St. Mary, Jesus' mother. For Lutherans such as myself, today is the Feast of St. Mary. Orthodox celebrate the Dormition, Catholics the Assumption.

But I wonder if the folks holding that sign are aware of what they're doing by writing Mary out of the parenting of Jesus. It's also worth noting that, in the account of Jesus and his miraculous conception, God provides an earthly father to His son. It's almost like God disagrees with Judge Walker about the importance of children having a father and mother.

But there's no doubt that Jesus' own views on marriage are anathema to Judge Walker. Here's what Jesus said about marriage:

And He answered and said to them, "Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh.

The sign maker's too-cute phrasing ignores that Jesus taught that marriage is the union of one man and one woman. But who is Jesus against Judge Walker, really?:

“Gender no longer forms an essential part of marriage . . ."

And don't worry, Judge Walker is bigger than Jesus. He has this to say to Jesus and anyone else who has the audacity to think God made humans male and female for a reason:

“Religious beliefs that gay and lesbian relationships are sinful or inferior to heterosexual relationships harm gays and lesbians.”

Take that, Jesus! Maybe I'm just sensitive because my church body was put on Judge Walker's "hit list" of churches that harm gays and lesbians. We're in fantastic company, but it does make one wonder what the new world order will look like -- when people who follow what Jesus has to say about nature, natural law and marriage are treated as bigots.

California's store owners are just grateful that Judge Walker isn't a kleptomaniac shoplifter, tired of being judged and stigmatized for pocketing a few items here and there. Shoplifting--still illegal by the the highest law, the Law of Walker.

I'm confused. Two dads?

I suppose they mean Father and Holy Spirit. But Father and Spirit are both God, as Christ Himself is God. Makes at least as much sense to say that Jesus was His own Father...

They don't get the Trinitarian metaphor, do they? -- God as the perichoresis that's Love...

I've heard plenty of funny gay slogans, but this one just doesn't make the cut.

They mean God the Father and Joseph, I presume.

I think they mean God the Father, and Joseph, the stepfather.

No, No, No, Mollie. When insult is directed at Christians, it's not blasphemy, it's 'bravery'. When insult is directed toward any other group, it's 'hatred.' Haven't you been watching the Times and your TV?

Happy feast of the Assumption to all my fellow Papists out there in Ricochet-dom.

So, are they admitting that God does indeed exist and the Bible is true? Then that makes the sign, therefore the author(s), even more assinine.

Um, isn't that judge homosexual? In which case, why would anything he wrote on this subject strike anybody as other than predictable? Freud or someone said biology is destiny, and the same is true of homosexuality. Squirm though the modern day commissars of political correctness might, homosexuality colors every thought and opinion gays have on just about any subject you can name, from art to zeitgeist.

Mollie Hemingway

Your Grace,

While I do think our sexual choices do affect our outlook -- and while I do think the opinion showed remarkable misogyny to the special role that women play in the marital relationship -- I disagree. And there are plenty of homosexuals who do not believe that the constitution includes a right to same-sex marriage. Even if they support same-sex marriage, that's a bridge too far for some.

If you say so, but I graze media fairly widely and these gays you speak of seem as rare as the "moderate" Muslims everyone looks for to condemn Islamic violence and repudiate some of its more obnoxious teachings.

What bravery! Speaking truth to power!

Now that they've nailed those awful Christians, let's see them go after the other world religions. Why not start with Islam? Think we'll be seeing any of those brave truth-talkers on the Capitol steps next weekend with a different set of posters, tailored to our Muslim friends?

Not likely.

Oh well, people who are confused and ignorant will espouse confused and ignorant slogans. Or, in this case, inaccurate and irrelevant. This is a great benefit to living in a "free-speech" country; we can more easily spot the fools. Anyone with a life rooted in faith will feel sorry for these folks. They quite literally don't know what they are missing.

Rob makes an excellent point, though. Odd how that no one has asked if the mosque at Ground Zero will perform same-sex marriages. It is a constitutionally guaranteed right, correct? I wonder if Pres. Obama and Mayor Bloomberg will be as quick to defend churches that decline to participate in such nuptials?

Rob Long: What bravery! Speaking truth to power!... tailored to our Muslim friends?

Isn't it ironic that the same people who want to speak truth to power, don't believe that truth even exists? "The enemy of the conservatives is my friend?" "Speak postmodern support to the marginalized powerless." You say either, I say "i"ther - let's call the whole thing off...Please!
