I’m not a “Birther,” although I’ve been labeled as one by various websites based upon a column I wrote called “Obama’s To Blame For the Birther Movement.”  I was also called a racist for writing it.  Left wing civility.

I take the President at his word that he’s a Hawaiian.  However, I can’t for the life of me figure out why he spends tens of thousands of dollars and man hours fighting lawsuits to not show his birth certificate, when he can win them for free by showing it.  I don’t care what his offered rationale is (the Birthers still won’t believe him, etc).  No excuse for not showing his birth certificate is more important than money.

My point of course is that whatever remains of the Birther movement is the fault of the President, who could rub them into irrelevancy for good by the simple act of waiving his birth certificate in front of a judge.  Most people wish he would.

Since every court so far has ruled the President doesn’t have to show his birth certificate, I figured the Birther movement would forever be relegated to the conspiracy dust bin of lingering history along with Oliver Stone’s Kennedy assassination fantasies.

Now cue the Hawaiian Governor Neil Abercrombie, who recently revived the dead controversy for the stated purpose of killing it. I imagine he did so much to the annoyance of the Commander in Chief.

Abercrombie, a Democrat, says he knew the President’s parents, and says he was “here when he was born.”  Wow.  There when he was born?  That’s some close friend!

Abercrombie vowed to finally put the matter to rest. He promised to show the world Obama’s pacific island birth certificate, and as Governor, he certainly has the access to get it done. Hallelujah!

So far, he can’t find it.  Good grief!  I must admit I find this amusing.  I can only imagine the President, face planted deep in his palm, is not so amused.

Despite fear of being called a Birther, a racist, Goebbels or any other name the vitriol-free left will call me, I ask simply – should this development, coming straight from a high member of the President’s own party as it does,  allow the Birthers new life?

Casey Way They are citizens of their respective country but since they are born within our borders, they are "citizens by birthright."  I believe that if you are born in another country to parents who are not citizens there, you are a citizen of the place of your birth first and have the option to apply for citizenship of your parents' country.  Someone please correct me if that is wrong.  · Jan 20 at 2:59pm

According to the USCIS:

"Whether someone born outside the United States to a U.S. citizen parent or parents is a U.S. citizen depends on the law in effect when the person was born.

These laws have changed over the years, but usually require a combination of at least one parent being a U.S. citizen when the child was born and having lived in the U.S. or its possessions for a period of time."

Frankly, I'm not sure I care whether or not we investigate a candidate's background beyond his actions and associations while we continually fail to verify the identity and eligibility of voters. While dead men vote, we deserve whatever we get.

Besides, as we've debated before, it's Obama's worldview and principles that are foreign.

Mike LaRoche:  I figure that Obama's birth certificate must contain some embarrassing (but not disqualifying) information

Care to speculate? I'm wondering what could possibly be so embarrassing.

I absolutely agree on the college transcripts.

My best guess is that, on Obama's birth certificate, his father's religion is explicitly listed as "Muslim."  "So what?" you say.  Well, in the eyes of the entire Muslim World, that would make Obama a fullblown Muslim (his mother's religion is irrelevant).  And they would expect him to govern as a Muslim.  In particular, howling mobs would take to the streets to demand that Obama denounce Israel.  His position as POTUS would be utterly compromised.

As for the college transcripts, rumor suggests that Obama never rose above the level of a "D" or "F' student, and that you will not find any papers, theses or dissertations because he never wrote any.  It is becoming more and more obvious that, when he was about 18, Obama was tagged as a hot political prospect and simply waved through the system — "wafted ever upward," to use Mark Steyn's brilliant phrase.  In effect, Obama is the ultimate beneficiary of affirmative action.

We will never see that birth certificate, just like John Kerry's military records, because of some Obama based reason.  One theory is that his mom was mad at his dad and put something in there that he would not like, which now could embarass a President.  Another theory is that the hospital staff was slack and just gave him the name "Baby Obama" like my grandmother's birth certificate ["Baby Ryan"].  My favorite theory is that once, if ever, the birth certificate is produced there will be pressure to produce college and law school transcripts that will some how be embarrassing.

If I can remember, on my Birth Certificate it lists my parents as Roman Catholic.  Maybe his lists his parents as Muslim or Atheist.  We already know his father was Muslim, but maybe he just doesn't want something on paper showing his name and the category of Muslim or Atheist. ??

The college transcripts is a no-brainer.  If they were "A"s we'd be seeing them.  More important are his college writings. · Jan 20 at 3:30pm

Mark Belling Fan,

Sorry I wasn't able to respond to your question sooner.  I agree with what Andrea and Lady Kurobara have said - they've both put forward plausible reasons as to why the hidden birth certificate and transcripts may be embarrassing.  Another possibility concerning the transcripts is that some of the classes listed might be goofy - something like "Marxist Lesbian Basket Weaving."

Though I doubt it's the case with Obama, some birth certificates do legitimately disappear. Mine was destroyed when Katrina flooded the records room of the New Orleans hospital where I was born.

Using Occam's razor type of thing, it's potentially simple - there is something out there that shouldn't be seen.  For example, perhaps for some scholarship or to get  admission to some program, he falsely indicated that he was a "foreign student".  Now, that wouldn't look so good for a president of the United States, would it??

Let me cast some light on this subject. My son was born abroad to me (a USA citizen) and his mother (not an American). After being born, I took the birth record from the hospital along with two photos to the US Consulate. He received a US Passport as a US Citizen. In those days, he could not receive his mother's nationality because of their law. My son's birth certificate is held by the State Dept. in Washington, DC.  If Obama were born in Kenya to an American mother he would STILL be a natural US Citizen.

Now cue the Hawaiian Governor Neil Abercrombie, who recently revived the dead controversy for the stated purpose of killing it.

I was in grad school in Hawaii in the 70s and Abercrombie was a hard-core leftist at that time.  BTW, I lived about halfway between the Dunham's condo and Barry's school. I recently remembered a strange encounter with a female grad student in the Anthro Dept who resembled Ann D., (which I don't want to put it in writing).

That's way too tantalizing!  You have to tell us now!

Well, I'll give you part of the story. I went to a lecture and sat next to a woman who had a book about South-East Asian religion on her lap. Since I had just returned from 5 years in SE Asia, I indicated my interest. She said she could get me a copy from the office of the prof she worked for.  After the lecture we went back to the office and got the book. She then said she was having some friends over to her apt. on Sat. and invited me over.  When I arrived on Sat. she was alone and it was obvious no one else was coming.  Two things make me doubt it was Ann D. #1 She told me she grew up in Hawaii.  #2 Ann D. would have been living at her parents condo, not in an apt. (She could have been apt-sitting though).  I really don't remember her name.  Several days later she contacted me and said I had to give the book back.
