Bin Laden's Revenge On Seal Team Six
[Editor's Update: AP reports that "none of the 22 SEAL personnel killed in the crash were part of the team that killed bin Laden in a May raid in Pakistan, but they belonged to the same unit." CBS now reports that "although Martin earlier reported that they were not members of SEAL Team 6, as some reports claimed, he is now reporting that It was Navy SEAL Team 6 but no members of bin Laden raid."]
This is a revolting development.
Fox News is reporting that the downed helicopter Claire reported on earlier was filled with members of Seal Team 6 which killed Osama bin Laden. All on board died. The Taliban is claiming responsibility.
Heartbreaking. Prayers to their families. This is a major loss to the American military of course in personnel, but also in morale.
The downed helicopters that downed Jimmy Carter’s Presidency weren’t lost to the Iranians. This is worse. America’s elite fighting force was taken out by the enemy.
I hate to politicize the issue early, but you might remember the American left wasted no time in politicizing Seal Team 6’s killing of bin Laden with this photograph:
So I ask the American left now – what was the President busy doing today?

Whatever mission they were on now, I hope it was damn important.
Rest in peace, rest in glory.

I seriously doubt that the Taliban knew who was in that helicopter.

CBS News has retracted the claim about Seal Team 6. The updated story is here. My previous comment stands.

Out of bounds, Tommy. Yes, the Left politicized EVERYTHING. But, I thought we tried to hold ourselves to a little higher, more objective standard. Let's let the facts come out and let the Left discredit themselves further by politicizing this.. as is their perpetual wont. I usually enjoy your posts and respect your point of view but, and you will please forgive my saying (writing) so, this is beneath you.

Yeah, I gotta agree a bit with Copperfield here. The circumstances aren't really parallel. And--a helicopter shot down by the enemy is something that happens in a time of war. A terrible, awful tragedy for these families and units. But that's war. A helicopter that crashes due to negligence--very different.
Carter gutted military programs and then wanted special forces to swing into action and reach out across the globe on a very difficult mission and save the day. It was a politically mismanaged, poorly planned, poorly funded calamity.
Obama, despite my many disagreements with him, has done nothing of the sort.

Re: Bin Laden's Revenge On Seal Team Six
The thought that occurred to me as I started to read the linked article by CBS was that this administration will make damned sure that it wasn't going to be reported in any way that strays from their narrative. Any group that will stoop to the level of Fast n Furious is capable of so much more. Any Seal casualty is cause for grief, but this admin can't be trusted with their safety as they are presently. Wonder how those negotiations are going with the Taliban ? Are they being held in friendly territory, Tehran perhaps ?
It's shameful that we make our finest go to battle with ROE that effectively ties one hand behind their back. That we don't commit the full force of our war machine in war .... the language fails.

Re: Bin Laden's Revenge On Seal Team Six
Why are the units involved in specific operations being published at all?? By being so open about the units who operate out of public view, you risk all future operations by them.
It was very disturbing to hear the administration talk about who did it, and where they were based out of, and what equipment was used, et al.
Normally our enemies would get that info from an informant .. or a deep mole.

Brave men. But others just as brave are going to die is we do not get out of these wars. Many more. I blame congress as much as the President.

The "corpseman" president needed the opportunity to prove his savvy of all things military, and to keep the mindshare for a while to extend the desperately needed polling bump. These other concerns were beyond his awareness.

Re: Bin Laden's Revenge On Seal Team Six
BravoFiveThree' s point about operational security is an important one. No one should ever have known whom was involved in the Bin Laden raid and no one should know about the units in this incident. Both are examples of needlessly informing enemies and in no way are necessary to an informed public.
From my milblogs readings, it seems unlikely that anybody involved in the Bin Laden raid is stationed in Afghanistan. Also, there is no such thing as Seal Team Six and there is a different designation now for that group. I think it is likely that people are reporting guesses. It is a terrible idea to provide your adversary with after-action reports that let them know what transpired. I doubt that anybody that really knows anything is disseminating this sort of information. I smell scuttlebutt, or rumors from low-ranking people with loose lips and few facts.

Dude. A combat casualty is a combat casualty. It matters not that a helicopter was taken out by bad planning, bad weather, freak occurrences, or the Taliban.
The downed helicopters that downed Jimmy Carter’s Presidency weren’t lost to the Iranians. This is worse. America’s elite fighting force was taken out by the enemy.
This is worse? Maybe from some weird, three-dimensional global diplomacy chess viewpoint, but since their mission was to kill bin Laden, well, mission accomplished.

Obama's not finished yet. I think the F22 is an example of a military program gutted, and notice that it was curtailed after most of the money had already been spent.
It appears military personnel are being left in harms way for the sole pupose of postponing an admission of defeat until after the election.
As for the killing of bin Laden, I believe Obama approved the plan because he feared his popularity would plummet if it got out he'd squelched it. I believe Obama will revenge himself on the military for putting him in a corner if an opportunity presents.

I ran several missions up the Tangi Valley where this happened. It is a long narrow valley, very isolated, surrounded by tall mountains with one small base at one end. Its also long been a haven for the Taliban.
Those men went into one dangerous area, God rest their souls.
