A few minutes from now, Glenn Beck begins his last broadcast on FNC.

Two questions:

1) Will he be missed (and by that, I'd like to know if you think Beck is a net-plus or net-minus in the scheme of things)?

2) If you had Mr. Ailes' ear, what would be your suggestion for filling the 5 p.m. slot?

I think he was a net plus although I only watched sporadically and then only until the next commercial break.  So what about as a replacement an hour of blank screen?  Not going to happen but is there really a need for more commentary of the populist variety, albeit conservative?

Melin:  I'll miss his history lessons but often had to tune out his god talk.

He should be replaced by Yaron Brook. ยท Jun 30 at 3:13pm

I'll admit, I slowly stopped watching regularly as the religious threads seemed to increase.  I enjoyed the history shows quite a bit, especially as he'd tell us which books and where he was getting this information.

However, as a man of religious convictions, I just couldn't take his pseudo-religious themes.

I never saw the attraction, but I had maybe 20 minutes total of exposure and, somewhere, there is always a Klavan on the Culture I haven't seen yet, calling my name.

All of the networks could do a lot worse than pick that up and use it somewhere, but the media gulags are devoid of taste.

Mrs. Sisyphus and one of the little Sisyphuses have descended like locusts on author Klavan's literary output as well and are saying good things. I may have to bump him up on my reading list.

I don't watch TV, but Glenn's effect on the discourse I consider a net plus.  My sister bought a subscription to his radio show for me just so I could indulge in the Gloat Fest in 2004.  Not that that was "discourse", but it certainly fit the bill as a guilty pleasure.

And then we got our comeuppance in 2008, didn't we?

I'd tune in to TV again for a modern Firing Line.  Pick an issue and get some of the brightest minds in the field to argue it.  Choose your weapons.  Fifty paces.

 Net?

I think negative because I never watched FN at 5 and nobody else will, either.  I assume most people that actually watched did so on tape delay, so what, really, is the difference between that and Red Eye, which most viewers view tape delayed?

In that context, I don't see how Fox gains except by new content.  So, new content.

Beck got trounced yesterday, and so did everybody else, by Headline News. Seems the Casey Anthony trial is Must-See-TV. (Not in my house, but in 357,000 other households.)

Radio guys don't seem to last in TV. Radio is so intimate and immediate. There's not much between the host's mind and the listener's ears. Television, on the other hand, is a producer's game and it takes a lot more prep and a lot more people to get it done right.

I think Firing Line ran on a mix of William F. Buckley's willingness to debate almost anyone, his phenomenal graciousness as a host, and the suspense created by his kerfuffle over Gore Vidal's casual slanders. When would he cut loose next time?

1. Net plus

2. Nick Gillespie, Laura Ingraham, Jonah Goldberg, Mark Steyn and Rob Long.

That would be 5 to watch.

Beck will be missed. He made history.

Here are my top moments from the show.

Glenn Beck was absolutely a net positive. Who else could send Road To Serfdom up to #1 on Amazon just by highlighting it for an hour on TV?

I think the obvious answer for a replacement is Peter Robinson's Uncommon Knowledge.

Or why not re air old episodes of Firing Line?
