A few minutes from now, Glenn Beck begins his last broadcast on FNC.

Two questions:

1) Will he be missed (and by that, I'd like to know if you think Beck is a net-plus or net-minus in the scheme of things)?

2) If you had Mr. Ailes' ear, what would be your suggestion for filling the 5 p.m. slot?

I think he will be missed the most by Jon Stewart.

Maybe, if they had a James Poulos in there.

By far net plus.

RedEye Early Edition.

Red Eye at 5 p.m. would be awful. They wouldn't be able to get away with half their material and the guests would be far more guarded.

I think Gutfeld could do an incredibly witty & relevant show that is safe for the 5PM hour.   Even if he just took over Beck's format, he'd make it work based on the his quick mind and likeable personality.  I don't think you'd want to change anything about ReyEye just to bring it to an earlier slot.  So starting fresh and unleashing the creativity of Gutfled and Levy would be my choice.

As I said earlier today and many times before, no public figure has been as influential in getting regular Americans to read up on history and political philosophy? For that and other reasons, a net plus by a mile.

So, then, not this?

Gutfield and Napolitano have proven they can be compelling hosts. Geraldo is the journalistic equivalent of soap opera. Juan Williams can be reasonable and can be ridiculous, so I'm not sure about him as a host. Bob Beckel is a grump. Who would want to watch that for an hour?

I watched Napolitano's Freedom Watch in its infancy. The subject material was very similar to Beck's show, but it was more traditional in style.

Steyn could surely compete with Beck's success, if Mark was willing to sacrifice his princely habit of meandering all over the globe. But, like others, I wonder if Beck's departure from FNC reflects a desire by the network execs to be liked by the Beltway crowd.

Any Ricochet contributor would, of course, be a welcome addition to TV news. Some can already be found at PJTV.

I will miss him - I will probably subscribe to his Internet TV and reduce my satellite TV subscription to not include Fox News.

Just saw the Fox Five announcement.  Five is too many!  It will be a free-for-all, with the loudmouths dominating.

Gutfeld, Napolitano, and Perino are great.  Beckel, Crowley, and Rivera earn a big thumbs down.

Why not think outside the box and bring in people from all different fields like Greg does on Red Eye?  I'm assuming Ann Coulter was too busy to commit, because she would be an excellent addition.

I would like to see an hour long interview with a newsmaker of the day, perhaps moderated by Megyn Kelly. My main gripe with all of the cable news shows are that they are superficial, partly because the medium is driven by short sound bites. I would not focus solely on politics.

How could I forget Mark Steyn???

I wouldn't assume Ricochet contributors, even a few of my favorites, would make good TV hosts.  Some yes, some no.  And keep in mind that to make it on Fox, the females need to wear miniskirts & sit behind an acrylic desk or table.  Not everyone would be willing to do that.

Megyn Kelly is excellent.  I also like Martha Macallum (sp?) & Brian Kilmeade.

Well, I'm a huge fan of Greg Gutfeld.  He could do a 5PM show that would be a giant hit.

But the idea of "The Five" seems interesting to me.  This could work.  I especially like the boldness and the freshness of the idea.

A lot of people have gone broke betting against Roger Ailes.  Personally, I'd never ever ever bet against his intuition and innate sense of what makes great television.

I think I'll probably be the last person in North America to scrape off his "Give James Lileks his own TV (or radio) show" bumper sticker.

It's not just that he's funny funny, but it's the pop culture/historical references funny, combined with the "connect your own dots to figure it out" funny that are so rewarding.

 1) No he won't be missed long term. The humor and banter of the radio show never translated well to TV and they eventually quit trying. He became oddly dour and put an expiration date on himself when he adopted the Cassandra role.

2) Mark Steyn is the obvious dream job candidate at that time slot. However, Glenn Beck proved that a didactic approach can still work. I keep thinking of Bill Buckley's 30-miles-off-the-Atlantic-coast accent and am picturing a didactic, eloquent, humorous gentleman (in the old-fashioned sense), preferably with an English accent. In short, the anti-Beck while still continuing Beck's teaching office. Lord Christopher Monckton? Daniel Hannen? Mark Steyn fits this bill as well with he exotic accent.

Let me clarify and say that that would only happen if I was Emperor of the Universe. None of those three would ever be considered, nor would they consider the offer. But we can dream...

I'll miss his history lessons but often had to tune out his god talk.

He should be replaced by Yaron Brook.
