obama

Yesterday, I suggested that President Obama could boost his reelection chances by adopting Russian strongman Vladimir Putin's "action hero" mien.  Well, it's looking mighty tough for a satirist to stay more than a day ahead of the reality of this administration.  Speaking in North Carolina yesterday, the president one-upped me by going straight over "action hero" to "messiah."  Crafty move.  He has this political category pretty much to himself.

Jesus Christ:  (John 14:15) "If you love me, keep my commandments."

Barack Obama:  "If you love me, you got to help me pass this bill."

Has anyone checked whether the oceans have stopped rising yet?

I saw the clip of Obama asking a crowd: "Do you love me? If you love me, you got to help me pass this bill" yesterday.  It gave me the creeps because of the parallel you point out.  But my mind actually went to John 21, when Jesus asks Peter "Do you love me?" and then commands him to "feed my sheep."

And yes, the oceans have indeed stopped rising.

Oh my gosh, I couldn't stop laughing at your comparison of the quotes.  As to whether the oceans have stopped rising, I'll take Diane at her word.

I agree with Diane about the creepiness.  Apart from the Jesus parallel, there's just the "dear leader" shudder factor.  We should not be loving our politicians.  It isn't their job to be lovable, but rather to do their duty as executors of the Constitution.  We may find them admirable, but love should be no part of it.  That's cult behavior.

Okay, to be fair to the President (and God knows I hate doing that), someone yelled out "We love you!" from the crowd, and that's what prompted his "If you love me, pass this bill" comment. It wasn't completely based in his needy narcissism. Partly, perhaps, but not completely.

Apparently they're available from Glenn Beck.

(And you thought you were kidding!)

(Check out the photo I linked. It clearly says "Made in China" on it, which only adds to the funny.)

I get that.  But wouldn't most politicians do an aw-shucks kind of wave, say "thank you, thank you" and just continue?  Who else but President Obama would seize on a treacly outburst from an enthusiastic supporter and fundamentally transform it into a call-to-action to pass economic legislation?

How do we know that the yeller was not a plant to setup such a moment?  I wouldn't put that past this president.

Rats! I thought I was being original.

Well, I refer to Dr. Savage: "...it's looking mighty tough for a satirist to stay more than a day [behind] of the reality..."

The oceans are doing what they have done for billions of years - rising and falling.

Well, at least Mr Obama is still popular in Europe. He would be much better suited to be President of Europe - it's an un-elected position, as I recall, and there are no requirements to have been born in Europe. With all the experience he has built up in the US he would have no great difficulty fixing the deficit problems there - he would simply print more Euros, raise VAT to 50% and tax the millionaires and billionaires at 110%.

Any US liberals who want to live in a utopia could follow him to Europe, with a special amnesty immigration program, thereby solving our unemployment problems and freeing up the capitalistic engine to fundamentally change the US back to the way it was founded to be.

Then I would believe in miracles.

You completely beat me to it! However, you left out the best part of the made in China. In parentheses it says "with your money". If you actually want to buy one, here is the link.

Looking at his website (yes, I took one for the team) it does not appear that Obama has a catchy theme or slogan for this round. The header is just a big 2012. Is that some kind of allusion to the Mayan Apocalypse?

Wow, I missed that.  As the commentary suggests, if a conservative talked that way it would be front-page news.
