It's looking more and more likely.  From a column in the Wall Street Journal by the Harvard economist Martin Feldstein:

The policies of the Obama administration have led to the weak condition of the American economy....

The data for May are beginning to arrive and are even worse than April's. They are marked by a collapse in payroll-employment gains; a higher unemployment rate; manufacturers' reports of slower orders and production; weak chain-store sales; and a sharp drop in consumer confidence.

It'll take awhile for the mainstream media to catch up with this economic and political reality, but President Obama, already vulnerable, is only growing more so.

*Make that defeated in 2012.  He won't actually leave office until January 2013.

I always feel awkward to hope for the worst, (economically speaking) but in this instance, I'll make an exception.

Peter, let’s not count our chickens quite yet. Republicans have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory before. Look at the last two special elections in New York.

I agree it’s hard to imagine the economy turning around sufficiently to give Obama much of a bounce by November 2012. And polls show the president losing to a generic Republican. But the problem is he won’t be running against a generic opponent. He’ll face off against an actual candidate who’ll have every opportunity to self-destruct at the most inopportune moment.

So let us keep our eyes on the ball and get this right. No need to start chilling the bubbly this soon. But when the time comes, save a glass for me.

Oh, Lord, I hope so. We're cooked as a nation if we re-elect this guy.

I'm too uneasy about the thing to confidently state BHO will be a one-termer. I heard him on the news tonight gassing about how peachy everything is, auto bailouts and everything, and damn if he isn't a formidable rhetorician, with the Greek Chorus of the main stream media giving him cover. He's still able to feed us horse(COC alert) while telling us it's ice cream. I'm afraid the voters will still be swallowing it whole in 2012.

I hope I'm wrong.

2012 will be interesting in that never before has the MSM been such a paper tiger with competition

Yes, this election will be a referendum on the legacy media. They will go all out for their man -- and when the public judges that man, the public will be judging them as well. If, on the other hand, the Republicans nominate again one of the living dead, our handsome young President will be giving his second inaugural in 2013.

As bad as the economy is and as long as the slump has lasted, and given the high gas and food prices, I am surprised that Obama has not accrued Jimmy Carter's reputation for bumbling. People were derisive of Carter (who nonetheless was beating Reagan 49% to 41% in May 1980 according to Gallup).

There is just no way for employment to reach on Election Day 2012 the same level it was on Inauguration Day 2009, even if the economy started growing again. I fear that any GDP rise in 2012 greater than 3% will be sufficient reason in the minds of many to re-elect Obama.

But why be pessimistic? Once a candidate has emerged from the GOP pack, he will seem stronger, especially after he has garnered the endorsements of his former rivals.  Or should I say, "her former rivals"?

He's on very poor footing. It is almost as though he hasn't cared to be in a position to get re-elected. Democrats have been relying on the MSM to spin everything but they can only go so far. Americans know whether they have a job or not and what the price of gas is. But now Obama can't assure us that things will 'change" He's already gone to that well.

So he can keep pretending, which James Carville thinks antagonizes people (I agree) or he can claim that this time he has a plan that will work. He will say his plans haven't had the chance to play out, he inherited something that was even worse than he thought. It's all pretty lame. The worst part for him is his professorial persona no longer carries any credibility.

This is also, as Paul Rahe says a referendum on the legacy media.

I noticed yesterday Jay Carney said something about "inheriting" two wars, and it occurred to me that the statement would have had some resonance had Obama not started a third all by his lonesome. There is very little they can tout as accomplishments.

There was a photograph of a yardsign posted on the net last week. I think on Hotair or Pajamasmedia, that read: "If you voted for Obama in 2008 to prove you weren't a racist, Who are you going to vote for in 2012 to prove you are not an idiot?" I plan to have bumper stickers made up of that quote soon.

I find that well-known jokes that make the rounds tell a lot.  You knew the Soviet Union was in trouble by the hokes that went around (some of which Reagan used to repeat in his speeches.)

Here is the one making the rounds:

When Reagan was president, Bob Hope was still telling jokes and Johnny Cash was still singing songs.

Now, we have Obama in the White House, and we have no Hope and no Cash.

...says it all...
