Baltic Rumors: Fog in Channel, Continent Isolated
It's "unscheduled down time" around the whole world, apparently. I can't send e-mails right now from Shangri-La North--I don't know exactly why, but my SMTP server doesn't like this part of the Baltic. I can, however, access Ricochet.
Fellow editors: I'm here. I haven't gone off to drink and gamble or sit in the jacuzzi or something. I am completely responsible. I just can't answer you.
General news: I just found a note addressed to "Mr. Rove" under my doorstep. No, I'm not going to open it. I don't read other people's mail. It's burning a hole on my desk, but I'm not going to open it, because it's not addressed to me. I want everyone to appreciate how outstandingly virtuous I am about these things.
Meanwhile, I'm hearing rumors that Ryan will run--from people who seem credible enough and say it's confirmed by other credible people. Take it for what it's worth--it's just a Baltic cruise ship rumor. But that's a Hillsdale College Baltic Cruise Ship rumor, not an ordinary rumor. Mail intended for Karl Rove winds up under your door by accident on this ship. So, maybe you heard it here first.

Does that mean that your stalker will be leaving notes for Karl, and will Karl be tempted by them....?
Re: Baltic Rumors: Fog in Channel, Continent Isolated
Karl's gone, remember? Disappeared in a cloud of Estonian mystery. You mustn't miss a single episode of Baltic Soap, etoiledunord, or you'll lose the plot.

Sorry, I missed that detail. I do remember the photo of the two blondes. That picture is seared in my memory.

I figured a picture might be worth a thousand words there.

I'm mildly disappointed that you haven't gone off to drink, gamble, or sit in the jacuzzi....
But it appears that even by sitting responsibly in your room, you're causing trouble Ms. Berlinski. This cruise is quite the mysterious venture: unsolicited mail to your inbox, anonymous Pentagon employees meeting you in Eastern European cities for a morning jog, mass internet outages.....You have the making of a decent novel here....

You know, I was just talking to another guest over lunch. She was woman one might not imagine at first glance to be interesting--you'd probably overlook her in a crowd. But she proved tremendously interesting. (Quote: "Well, my grandfather was a Satanist.")
There's really no such thing as a boring person. Every human being is in some way worth writing a novel about.

This cruise of yours is shaping up to be a most excellent video game. Time to get Aaron on the case. Five years from now when Electronic Arts is asking for gaming license rights for Ricochet, you'll have to pull out your notes.
Re: Baltic Rumors: Fog in Channel, Continent Isolated
If you are having a wild time on this cruise, just think what life is like in Hillsdale itself.

Murder on the Baltic Cruise?
Re: Baltic Rumors: Fog in Channel, Continent Isolated
I'm working on total Hillsdale-Ricochet convergence.

Why write novels, Claire? You life is one! (A very fun one to read, by the way, and I don't much care for fiction.)
Re: Baltic Rumors: Fog in Channel, Continent Isolated
Odd thing is that in recent years I've read much less fiction on the same theory--why bother with the things people make up, when reality is real? Then recently--I posted about this--I re-read Darkness at Noon. It reminded me of the many ways that fiction can be more powerful than non-fiction. Obviously, that's a novel based upon real historical events, and it draws much of its power from that. But the literary devices Koestler uses can only be deployed in a novel.

To quote one of the greatest television political philosophical riffs of all time. I give you this exchange (because its Friday and its glue day):
Chief: How can we believe a man who would sell out his friends?
Siegfried: Dumkopf! Who else are you supposed to sell out? You can't betray enemies!

I don't mean to be contrary but I found nothing in the picture that wouldn't cause me to say "generic teenage girls walking across street. yawn."
